I'm in shock. I am sad. My baby is not even six months old! I think I want to cry. :(

What are my options? Can I send the guitar to SLO for refinishing? What happens over the long term if I choose not to repair it? How detrimental would it be (other than cosmetic) to leave it alone?

There shouldnt be any ill effects if you leave it alone apart from cosmetic...but if it was me I'd want that sorted! Not sure what your options are though as it'll involve more than a few $'s I expect...

I have a chip in my SS, it's like a war wound. Think of it as character. From the look of it, if you send it back to SLO, they might have to replace the whole body, which means a different finish and piece of wood. If you like/love it keep it. You probably get scratches on your car every now and then, do you take it to the body shop and get it fixed, nah, you live with it and chalk it up to character. My opinion.

I shudder to think about my JP6 getting wounded. :( It's almost a year old and only a minute 1/4" long finish crack on body where the neck joins, but I've been assured it doesn't affect the guitar or the neck if it's only the clearcoat.

I have an 20 year old Strat I play now and then that's started to look like the ones Stevie Ray Vaughn owned - like someone used it to shovel rocks or something. I bought it new. It's got lots of character :D

I feel for you though, but I don't think I'd go through the getting it fixed thing, unless it chaged the way the guitar sounded, which isn't likely.

If the chunk was out of the fingerboard, I would get it seen to, but as it stands I would leave it. Its going to be the first of many like this!

You should see my Red Axis up close, its tatty as hell, but sounds and plays great!

If it bothers you that much, you could apply some stain to the bare wood so its not so noticable.

Oh well, battle scars! Hey, they're nothing to be ashamed of, wear 'em with pride! Besides, only the first one hurts...

Seriously, everyone's guitar gets dinged if it gets used... I use colored nail polish (borrowed from my wife or daughter) or automotive touch up paint to touch up the bigger dings on my guitars, just so that there's some finish there... If that were my guitar, I'd see about getting a small tube of automotive touch up to fill the hole, then I'd forget about it and play...
 
I feel for you - if that was my EVH, I'd be devastated. Because it's on the top, I'd try to get it touched up so it's not so noticeable. Good luck dude,

It's all part of the character of the guitar.
Jus think SRV and it won't feel so bad :rolleyes:

It's bound to happen. It's like buying a new car. Those first few months are killer!
 
I have a friend here at work that thinks you should put a scratch somewhere not noticable on your new car, as sort of a chistining (spelling, Keith a little help here) so you won't be so worried about it when it happens. Though I could never do that to any of my EBMM's!!!!!!

Take off one the back plates and scratch the hell out of it there!
Just try explaining that to someone if you ever sell it! (You did what!? Why!?) :D
 
Given the location, I'd probably seal the chip, so the wood isn't affected (it's right where your left arm rests/sweats).

Other than that, let it go. Your headstock and neck are in more danger than the front of the body.:cool:

fly me over there...i'll bring some automotive touchup poly & fill it in . takes about 2 -3 weeks to do.

seriously though....it's in a dark area....it can be patched up fairly well. i'd get some black touchup paint....& also some closely matching blue.....& get to it.
