Passive SUBs, dun dun dun

Hello gentlmen,

I've been pondering with the idea of a new bass and will refine this into one simple question.


Does anybody think that whether or not I get a Passive SUB, as opposed to an Active SUB, would improve/deterr from the tone of a Fretless SUB Stingray.

I've had good luck with both active and passive fretless basses...... kind of depends on what yer goin' fer.....

Yeah, I sort of had that thought.

I was thinking that perhaps the Active P'ups would take away from that classic 'open' sound that you get from a passive pickup, and in the case of this particular fretless, 'open' sounds like a good thing.

And yet, I worry that with a passive P'up I may lose the body that I would want when I'm not trying to replicate a big thumpin' double.

I ordered a SR5 Fretless with Piezo a while ago to have the best of both worlds, but unfortunately I have a feeling I may have lost my oppertunity on that one, so I'm thinking ahead just incase.

I'm pretty sure the pickup is passive with both of the basses, it's just that the active SUB has a 2-band preamp. If you got the active SUB, you could rewire it to bypass the preamp to test out the passive tone. You really couldn't go the other direction (buy the passive and add a preamp).

Good point about the rewiring. I hadn't thought about that, though now that I have I think I may just go with that. Thanks.
