Photo Request: SR5 Compensated Nut

Hi everybody! (sorry for borrowing the phrase, Dr. Nick) Does anyone have (or would someone possibly take) a close-up photo of an SR5 compensated nut? The reason I ask is that I may be interested in an SR5 available on ebay.uk right now. It looks like a very recent SR5 with the compensated nut, but the item description states "and the nut has recently been re-cut by an experienced luthier".

Knowing what I've heard about EB customer service, I'm wondering why a compensated nut on a recently produced SR5 would NEED to be re-cut, and I can only assume the bass wasn't under warranty for some reason or another (grey import?). Looking at the photo the slot for the B-string looks different than the others, and I wonder if that is what has been altered. I haven't asked the seller about this yet, but I'm just about to do so, and wondered if anyone here had any ideas or could at least show me a photo of theirs.

Fingers crossed for you Dave that it's all good! :D Seriously nice bass! Can't help you on the question, but that is gorgeous. Bet it would look better with a tort or abalone guard.

ETA - Ooh and it's in Peterborough! I sense a swap coming on... you'll hopefully visit with one bass and leave with another!

Hey Azzy, yes I noticed this bass's location as well :) When I went back to ask my question I saw someone else had already asked the same thing (competition!) Apparently the g-string nut slot was reshaped to get a lower action. Seems a little strange, but I suppose it's possible and seems legitimate enough. I'll be keeping my eye on this one and see how it goes. Unsure how I'll manage with a 5 string, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Would still like to see some close-up shots of a compensated nut, once the rest of the forum wakes up.

I would have expected the Dude to still be up, at the very least! :)

We may have to plan things so that you and your other half can come down during the Peterborough Beer Fest, which is just round the corner from where I live! :)
 
This may help. It's a 4 string but I imagine the compensated G would be the same as the SR5.

Cheers Gav. Even though it was the compensated G slot that was supposedly recut, I was more concerned by the look of the B string slot. The slot appears different to the others, in that it doesn't appear to have the large cutaway section on the side closest to the top edge of the fretboard on the B string, but this could be due to the sheer thickness of the B string requiring a large slot and not anything that has been modified. I am also wondering whether this is purposefully designed in such a way so that the nut doesn't break in this region, as I would assume this could be quite a weak area when housing the fat B string. This is why I wanted to see an unmodified "from the factory" compensated SR5 nut. But thanks for your help! :)

This is VERY true! I was about to invent something creative the Dude could have been up to instead of hanging out here, but anything I could think of would probably pale in comparison to the real event. Maybe he's actually asleep!!!

That sounds good, but I have found that my other half has recently developed an aversion to attending such events when she is enlisted as the designated driver! Apparently I can become quite loud when left unchecked, ha-ha. I'd probably have to be careful when bass trasactions/large sums of money are in the same vicinity as a beer festival!

There's definitely something weird about that sR5's nut...looks like the b is pulled to much towards the edge of the fretboard..i wonder if it was recut to change the string spacing.....

Damn, now I'm paranoid again! Can any other SR5 owners give their opinions on this please, and perhaps I need an actual photo of an SR5 compensated nut, just in case the Bongo5 compensated nut looks different due to differences in neck width. I too thought the B-string looked a little close to the edge of the fretboard (what originally caught my attention, especially with the re-cut nut comment) but then I seem to think the B-string on the SR5 IS pretty close to the edge of the neck. Help!

The nut looks fine to me. Any closeness to the edge could simply be attributed to the angle of the picture.

Have you thought to ask the seller about the B string slot?


I think you are overthinking this. If you want the bass, get the bass. If something is amiss with the nut, it's not exactly rocket science replacing it. As long as you don't put in a stupid bid, it's still sure to be cheaper than buying new if that's the exact bass that you want, ya know?

I've had a look at the ad, and the nut looks fine. I think the reason for your concern is that the neck was shot from an angle, which makes the B slot look kind of off. Go ahead, pull the trigger, the worst thing that can happen is you have to get Strings & Things to send you another nut.
