Can you order a Misic Man Stingray 4-string bass without the pick guard? I think everything about the bass is great other than the pick guard. It looks like a big pick.

Nope. They all come with pickguards.

Wow, thats the complete opposite of most people's problems with the pickguard. Usually when people have a problem with a pickguard, its the SR5 and not the SR.nashman said:

You could just take off the pickguard and put the screws back in place. I did that with my Bongo for a while and it looked really nice, in my opinion. Now it sports a custom "algae out break" pickguard.

The clear pick guard is an interesting option ... I didn't see it listed as an option on the site. Midopa ... your Bongo looks awesome with or without ... you are right ... it's not bad with just the screws in place.

I just redid my sr5 in natural blond and thought the pickguard was way too big,so I cut it down to just above the pots to show off that beautiful grain .OOps...too much wood.Looked off balance.I just ordered a new red tortoise shell pickguard.You can usually fix ur boo boos.sometimes it just costs a little more.
Now,to look for a maple neck...then it`ll look hot.How much is an EB maple neck going for?Or trade?

I believe the 20th Anniv Stingrays have the pickguard stuck on, no screws involved. So, you could take the pickguard off if that's the look you're going for.
They usually go for $1600-2000 used, though.
I had a couple of earlier Stingrays refinished (they had some extra routing that was filled in). Before I put the pickguards back on, they had that 'no pickguard' look with the fresh paint. Looked OK, but I think they're much better fully dressed.

I like the SR4 & SR5 pickguards...to me, they're 80% of the basses' personalities (aesthetically speaking, of course).

thats my question to would removing the pickguard cause a big whole and make the bass more open to damage to the pickup?

PG is very useful, although I play with fingers, not with the pick, if there's no PG I would already dug out some holes in the body wood around the pickups!
Anyway, oval shape of PG is trade mark of Music Man basses and they are recognizable from a distance, so I like EBMM PGs very much!
(hope that SR5 will have oval PGs in the future too
)
If You want a Music Man without PG, buy a 25th, or wait for the Reflex model, I suppose it wouldn't have PGs!
