Hey all... I bought my JP 6-string no piezo almost two years ago now. My question is has anyone changed pick-ups on this guitar? and also has anyone had any problems with the pot on the volume knob? mine is really scratchy and is either on or off and doesnt controll the volume anymore...

I currently own 3 Jp's and one of them I changed out the pups. I put a Dimebucker at the bridge and a SH-58 at the neck. I am happy with it. I kept the other two original. Just wanted to do something a little different. Works for me and that is what matters.

As for any problems? I have been fortunate enough to not have a problem with any of my guitars. So, I couldn't help you there. Sorry.....

see, the reason why i want to change pick-ups is the guitar at full volume has really horrible feedback... and i dont know if it has anything to do with the pick ups or that volume knob... do you think i should change that pot first... and if a tech support guy is in here what do you think?

You did say that the pot was not responding....so I would check that first.....however, I am NOT a techie type. But, I tend to think if the pot is not working as advertised, check it out. Could be a simple wiring issue that can be fixed on the cheap. A pup change would be more $$$ that can be used to buy something else if it is something small like the pot or a wiring issue. I am sure there will be some "techies" here who will steer you the in the right direction if I am wrong......

Controls - 500kohm volume and tone - .022µF tone capacitor. Something tells me that they are variable being that you can vary the freq to increase/decrease volume.....but that part I am no expert on......someone throw me a lifeline here!!!!!

I'd contact clean the pots first. If you're getting feedback it could also be at the amp level. Tube amp? Maybe you have microphonic preamp tube in there somewhere.

well when the, scratchy, volume pot is all the way up i get massive feedback from my marshall tube amp and also from my peavey solid state amp.

if i turn the volume down 1/4 sometimes it goes away but that is depending on whether or not the pot is actually functioning correctly. but it doesnt really control the volume anymore. if i turn the knob on and off it just scratches and pops and clicks.

should i just get a new pot... clean it?... call ernie ball...?

well i figured out that it is variable and also i remembered something... the cloth around my pick-ups got all glue covered and came of thread by thread. does that cloth do anything?

Yup....that's fabric tape to protect the copper wire windings that basically makes your pickup a pickup. Think of 'em as the equivalent of veins in your body!

If a few threads came off and some wire is visible from the top or bottom of the pickup, no biggie as long as it's not rubbing up against anything (especially metal) and there's little or no chance of anything touching it.

However, if you took it all off, you might wanna put it back on or get some similar fabric tape and recover the area. If one of those thin copper winding wires gets broken or corroded by sweat or some other moisture, your pickup will likely be toast (and will have to be rewound or completely replaced), or won't perform at full potential if it still works.

Did you take the tape completely off? That might be considered a "user modification" that could theoretically invalidate a warranty for the most anal and customer-unfriendly of manufacturers - I can't speak for EBMM on how they'd treat something like that. Maybe they'd be cool about it, give you a minor slap on the wrist and a scolding, and Jongitarz or Derek could arrange to send you some or recommend a suitable substitute as the pickups are made by DiMarzio (perhaps they use the same material or something similar on their in-house made PUs)...

Speaking of which, plain black electrical tape cut and applied neatly would also do the job equally well, just won't look quite as spiffy as the fabric. I think I've seen some manufacturers use a flat black plastic tape before, if memory serves correctly...just be careful and try not to press too hard against those copper windings when applying to avoid causing a break or wire shift that might cause a short-out.
