Hey all. excuse my lack of properly knowing the terminology on this, but here it goes. I picked up a 30 anniversary stingray with 2 pickups next to each other. I heard of someone cutting in a 3rd pickup above the others and installing a type of toggle switch to decide which pickup is used. Does this make any sense to anyone. thanks alot

A what? With how many pickups? The 30ths come with one pickup.

Did someone do an aftermarket install of an additional pickup?

Yes, you are correct. I guess I was talking about each coil. I read a thread not too long ago about someone cutting in another pickup and installing a switch. I'm not saying I want to do it, or even why, but I was just thinking that if it is possible, would it be a nice add-on to this bass.

I personally dont think so, with the money your going to have to spend to do it you may as well just sell that bass and buy one of the new 2 pickup models.

mmm. selling isn't an option. my wife bought it for me for a wedding gift. Plus, I really like the look and sound. My first MM. Thanks

Well then I definitely wouldnt sell if your wife bought it! But at the same time I really think you should just save up for a dual pickup model and leave your 30th Stingray the way it is.

That's not a bass I would go hacking into. Just hold out for a two-pickup model; something tells me that those'll be around for a while.

I personally have heavily considered getting an HH sr4 and switching the electronics...

I never intend on selling my 30th, the Mahog does wonders for the tone. Now if it just had the second pickup i would be even more in love.


It's your bass, if you are never selling it, put in a second pickup if you really need one, just understand that routing is incredibly not reversable....


like i said before, I bought my 30th to play, not as an investment..

I would have to agree. It is yours and as nice as they are, it is a tool, if that's what you got it for. If it needs to be modofied to meet your needs do it. I would take it to a pro myself...
