Piezo enhancement

I think the piezo on the JP's sound great but I was wondering if anyone has tried using an acoustic simulator or something like the fishman aura to get it sound better?

JP himself uses a fishman aura when he is playing on stage so yes, people do do that and it works great

My 2 cents--- I use a LR Baggs DI box to enhance the sound, and it sounds great. I tried the fishman aura DI and it was just ok.

I have heard of people using a DI then to the aura with much success.

IMO, a DI box is a necessity.

Isn't the Fishman aura a DI box? I won't be using this in a live situation so what setup would work best just going straight into an acoustic amp?

I only have a roland cube 40,but i must admit,the piezo sounds great on the acoustic simulator

i use the Aura16 (which is not a DI box) wirh 50% mix and a passive DI box to feed the signal to the PA sytem.

Is a DI box only needed if I was running into a PA system live where noise or signal loss would become a problem?

I split the piezos off to channel 1 of the Quilter. That is usually blended with something I have going on in channel 2 so it is fine without any enhancements.

I'm not understanding what a DI box is for, I thought it was used as a buffer?

The DI box will make the output balanced, which in turn, helps to eliminate noise by rejecting a large portion of RF and EM interference.

There are active and passive DI boxes, as there are active and passive acoustic pickups (JP piezos are active---- not sure if Ive ever seen/heard of passive piezo system, but could be wrong). An active pickup/piezo can be plugged straight into a PA, a passive cannot. So an active DI box allows someone with a passive pick-up be able to plug into the PA and be heard. Using a DI box with the piezo is just to tweak the sound to your liking. The Aura DI box also allows you to use imagining (12 string, nylon string, etc).

I have an active DI box-- which means I need to keep the gain really low to not distort the sound (active pickup to active DI can be a bit overbearing). I use it simply to enhance the sound… such as using a great amp.
