Just put the Power Slinkys that I won from Tom (maddog) on the Bongo, and I must say that the tone is incredible-the PS's seem to add some extra harmonic content as a result of their sheer size. My hands might take some time to get used to them, but I can live with that for the sound.

So I take it the strings dropped in without having to alter the nut? I jammed a couple of songs with my buddy's hard rock band and I felt that the Bongo's tone was somewhat lacking in aggression or should I say "growl". My tone seemed to be too clean so I was wondering if going to Power Slinkys would beef up the tone or would flats be the way to go :confused: . Tuned down 1/2 a step by the way.

I did have to run the G string back and forth through the nut slot a couple of times to make sure it fit, but otherwise, they dropped in, no problem. YMMV, though, as I have put some larger-than-standard strings on this bass before.

Still, it's no problem to make them fit.
 
Heavier gauge string are great to get a low action on the bongo without excessive fret buzz.
I just strung mine with 65 - 130, tuned DGCF and it plays like a wonder.
