problem with stringing

JUST got a stingray in the mail today. i'm content with my purchase, although it's not ALL i thought it would be. nice bass though.

ANYWAY.

i'm having trouble stringing the D-string. i was putting on elixirs and every other string wound on pretty well except for the D. whenever i started tuning, the string would start slipping out, and it would pop out past a certain point. the hole in the tuner is so damn large that it's so easy for the string to slip out. so i had to leave the old D-string on (which is a d'addario i think...don't really like it). the elixir is now unusable and i think i cursed at least 40 times. I'm very angry. that's like...almost 10 dollars right there.

has this happened to anyone else? what can i do to prevent this from happening next time?

What exactly is it "not" that you thought it would be?


I've never had any problems stringing any of my Rays. Cut the string to proper length, insert in the hole, bend string down to form 90 degree or so angle, wind string... easy enough!
 
i'm not blaming eb...i usually cut my strings about my thumb's length past the string post and i've found it to be enough.

maybe longer than that is needed?

i cut it the same amount for each string and it all worked so i found it weird that it didn't work for that one.

Unless you're an orangatang I would say that's nowhere near long enough to ensure a good bind on the tuner post. Of course, YMMV.

Wow. I'm glad I never read what is "suggested". I'm sure I pull too hard on the strings for 3-4 inches of winding to stay put. For me, I end up with 6-8 inches on each tuning peg, and string slippage is a thing of the past. On the weekend my Stingray got shaken around in the back of the van in it's hard case for a couple of hours, and was in perfect tune for our gig. I played the life out of it for 4 hours, put it back in the case and the next day drove another couple of hours to another gig, did a sound check, and it was still perfectly in tune. With 3-4 inches of string winding I'm not convinced that would be the case (for my style of playing). Again, YMMV.
 
I always go about 5 inches past the post, and have never had a problem.

I like there to be 4 wraps of the string on the tuning post. 6 wraps on the D and G strings.

No problems with going out of tune on three hour gigs.

But, I agree that it sounds like you cut the string too short, and I agree that you can't blame EB for that.

i had the EXACT same problem when u first put new strings on my stingray .. but afterwards i realised that i had cut it just an inch to short ...so i eventually had to buy new strings
 
I had the same problem, same string, with Elixirs.

Give yourself a little more length to wind on, should solve it.

It's a bastard when you've done $40 on the set & only 3/4 are on the bass eh?
