push/pull pot, coil tap an Axis SS

Hey guys,

I've got a question. How easy would it be to coil tap the neck pickup(to get a single coil sound) on an Axis SS with piezo. Is there any reason why it can't be done. If it can be done can you suggest the best way to do it using a push/pull style pot.

This would be easy to do once you had the wiring figured out - the pickups are tapped and the wiring on the five-way would show you what's what if you knew what you were doing... I've done wiring on my own guitars, but I spend hours researching and getting wiring diagrams from the Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan sites before doing it, and then spend hours fixing up my screw ups, so I'm not the best person to ask for advice on the specifics of HOW But I can tell you with some certainty, yes, it can be done...

Yeah, you could do it. However you'd get hum in that position since you'd lose the humbucking configuration. I could do up a wiring diagram if you really wanted.

Another way to do this is to buy a "Q-filter" from Bill Lawrence ($20) and wire it up to your tone control. When engaged, it will reduce the inductance of your pickups, effectively making them sound like "sweeter" single coil pickups. Easer to wire up (just add it to your tone control, or with a push-pull pot) and will affect all of your pickup positions. Also- you'll still keep the humbucking configuration on your pickups, so this will be totally noise-free. It's a very cool gadget (variable inductor).

Dude- I live mid-town and have a Super Sport that's wired up with one. You're more than welcome to try 'er out and see if you like the sound of it. But having done this on many occasions, I prefer the Q filter over the coil split.

Thanks Beej Hey Beej, thanks very much for the invite. That's very cool of ya But, I put the question out there for a buddy of mine who lives in the Kingston area. I don't need to coil tap cause I've got my Silhouette with the single coils. After trying my Axis SS and Silhouette, I think I've converted my buddy to the EBMM family. He has a chance to pick up an Axis SS. He's always been a Fender guy and was curious how big of a deal it would be to do a coil tap to get the single coil sound. I'll pass on the info. I told him to pass on the Axis and order a Silhouette, especially since he likes the single coil fender vibe.
