Question for JPXI/ JP12 owners :-)

Hi all, first post so be gentle!

I'm after an owners perspective on either a JPX1 or JP12 (I'm after the 20" radius neck).

I guess what I'm trying to achieve (as many are..) is a one guitar solution for gigging. First thing to say is - I'm no shredder...I play a mixture of rock and pop - but I'm mainly a rock guy. So my questions are 1) can I get classic rock sounds out of this guitar as well as the modern high gain stuff? I'm aware this is also amp dependant (I have a Mesa express 5:25). Can I also get a workable pop/ funk(ish) sound? I'm aware this is not exactly what the guitar was designed for! I plan on trying one out but I need to travel a bit to do that - so any thoughts in advance may save me a trip.

As an owner of both I can assure you that either one will cover the rock/metal sound perfectly. I don't play pop or funk but I would think you could get a suitably funky sound from the coil-split mid position (and the piezo is amazing!). If I were to recommend one over the other I would say the JP12, but that is just personal preference and I'm sure you could find someone on here who would recommend the JPXI over the JP12. Either way, you are getting an extremely versatile guitar that should cover all the sonic territory you are after.

Also the thing to consider is your amp. For instance I have a 5150 3 50 watt. If I want straight up metal I go channel 3 dime the gain and your good. If I want something like modern rock I back the gain off a bit and the presence. If I want 80s hair metal I go to channel 2 and possible an overdrive. If I want classic rock then I go channel 2 and no OD.....and on and on.

I have tried all these settings with my JPXI 7 and have been very satisfied. Yes you could switch to PAF style pickups and get it dialed in a bit more for the classic stuff but thats where the volume knob on your JPXI comes in. I actually use my JPXI 7 for anything from Boston to Metallica, Dream Theater, Maiden to Trivium and Fear Factory and much more......
 
Thanks for both your replies, all useful information. Sounds like I'll be making that trip to check one out tomorrow and probably closing my eyes when handing over my debit card!!

No worries about the JP covering the ground you are looking for. Hell the JP can do jazz too if need be with the right set up.
 
Jazz unlikely but never say never..This is increasingly sounding like the guitar I'm after, looking forward to hearing the piezo also.
 
Well I'm pleased to report that I am now the very proud owner of a JP12. It is unquestionably the finest guitar I have ever owned. Did I mention how happy I am!!!

I'll do a longer post in the morning as I'm off to crack open a celebratory cold one :-)
