Recessed neck heel plate - when was it stopped and why?

My Axis Super Sport and my old Silhouette Special both had the neck plates recessed slightly into the body so that the plate was flush with the wood... I've noticed my newer Axis and Axis Sport just have the neck plate placed on the body like most other bolt-neck guitars. I was wondering when EB/MM stopped recessing the neck plates into the body, and why? The EB/MM neck joint is undoubtably sweet, but recessing the neck plate adds a touch of extra class that I think looks and feels real nice...

thanks

Well, that answers the question, but I too think it's too bad that they stopped... It was a real quality touch, and it's a shame it is no more... thanks Darrell
