Hey all. I've been back after 12 years of not playing. I just picked up a new bass and was wondering what you all use to record. I just play at home with a 12" crate cab. I'm looking for something easy to record with but also something that I can add some drums or guitars also. Maybe their is some computer software out there I can use for this. Thanks for the help.

I use a Presonus Inspire. It's a small device that accepts mic or instrument inputs while also allowing itself to be connected to a PC via Firewire or USB. It comes with Cubase recording software and some drum kit software add ons. $199 IIRC.

Ooh - bit off topic (sorry for the hijack guys), but we've just switched to Mac and can't get our guitars to record on Garageband without sounding hissy, particularly on certain effects. Is there a trick or something we're missing here?

Plus, is there a way we can make the guitars louder without cranking up the inputs which make everything distorted?

I use Adobe Audition, good quality, but not difficult to work with. I have an M-Audio usb soundcard to connect all my instruments with my pc. For bass, I only use the M-Audio, no pre-amp. I run the guitars through a Line6 POD, then through the M-Audio.
 
I use a presonus firebox. It's a firewire device that will work on PC as well. If you use a PC and don't have firewire, you can add it using a PCI slot for like $20. It includes two mic pre-amps, plenty of inputs, and MIDI support as well. Also includes Cubase LE. They just recently dropped the price too.
 
I use a LowEnd TrueVoice preamp into a Presonus Firebox via firewire into Cubase LE. I mix down to two tracks and do my final tweaks with SoundForge.
