Refinish-Shock!-Horror! (or not, pictures included)

So I finally did it! took me 4x,years to build up to it, The bass is a keeper so hopefully after I gig it for the next ?many years, you know that there is a sunburst under there that might? slowly appear over the years of being loved and used, His name is Mr.Black. (another story)

P.S I wont ask that its details be changed in the data base as its still sunburst at heart!

The original vision, it had a white pick guard but it looked ? not right so sticking with the black, as it here in the pictures (taken today) that's how it will stay .

Its finished and I'm happy !

Love it! I've always had a thing for sonic blue guitars, and if that's not sonic blue, it's pretty close. Looks like you did a great job too. I've pondered doing the same with one of mine, maybe someday.
 
Thanks! Yeah its a close version of sonic/powder/baby/light/blue. It took me over 4 years to actually go through with it, with all the shall I ? shall I not ? I was just playing it one day at home next thing you know its stripped to a body an being prepped ready to paint.

I'd say the whole thing took around 4 weeks before it was ready to paint, cut the paint after 3 days then started putting parts back on it, its still not 100% ready to use, I'm going to leave it a while to fully harden before I use it but its all set up ready to go.

Inspired by the look of the vintage 7enders, they were all finished in sunburst at the factory so custom orders were painted over existing stock, 20,30 years of honest gig work and the sunburst is shining through!
What I do hate is new guitars/basses that are made to look worn out. I have put a lot of time an TLC into this refinish so plan on keeping it as good as I can, dings happen. I was mortified when I chipped my other Stingray (see other posts) but .... its all experience an I will be putting my own mark on it over the years.

I have "customised" my cabs too, if a mod ok's it I will put a pic up :p (and no nothing blue):cool:
 
It does look nice but i would only respray a mm bass myself if the finish was too bad. And still i would propably have it done. But annyway nice work!
 
Yeah I know what you mean, nothing wrong with a refinish if its done properly, not just daubed on lol, the body was in pretty bad shape so it was a refinish project from the start, filler needed in quite a few places, the original polyurethane finish as standard doesn't age particularly gracefully, it chips of in bits rather than fading off etc
I have worked in auto shops for over 15 years so that's a great help to the situation :p and no I didn't bake it in a car oven, its all been done steadily at home :)
 
Thought id dig this thread up for an update, the Stingray has been on a bit of journey since I started this thread. So I refinished it making it flawless, smoothed out all the knocks an dings (and there were many) painted, cut the paint polished the paint, refitted it an played it for the next month or so at every practice/gig I did but..... then it started to feel, in a word wrong!
So I started again :) stripped it all off, back to the sunburst, all the filler out and mixed some more paint, I adjusted the mix slightly and applied the pint directly.
It doesn't look much different at a glance than it does in the pictures above but look closely and you can still see who it is under the new finish. That was a few weeks ago it is now fully back in service and not long back form a recording session.
I didn't feel the need to tell anybody that I had to refinish it again until now, my other half thought I was crazy but it had to be done, so thought id post it and tell the EB community :)
In short I'm very bonded to that Stingray, from the initial buying it in 2010 I think it was, its been on a journey to say the least! Its a keeper that's for sure! anyway, nobody wants to buy a used refinish so I guess its mine now :P

Thanks, The light blue suites it well. when I first had the vision to do the blue it would have a white PG on it, it did for a while, a whole hour or so then back-forth, back forth with the black one, had to settle on black just didn't feel right.
Keep it exactly how it was just add top coat. simples :)
(that theory could of save me many hours any much £ in materials but you live an learn. Have a plan and stick to it ! :D )
