Replacement necks (rosewood for maple)

Does anyone know if the company has changed their position on buying replacement necks? A few years ago, I wanted to replace the rosewood board on my Axis Sport with a maple one. I was told that EB/MM would not allow this. Does this seem kinda bizarre to anyone else?

This might have something to do with Warmoth making 'em for a while and EB/MM really frowned on it.

Our policy on replacement parts has not changed. Necks are only available as warranty replacements items. If a need arises we can make available a new one provided the old or damaged neck is returned first. The same type of neck and fingerboard is made available as the one that came on the guitar direct from the factory. We do this to preserve the originality of the instrument.

Who's guitar is it after it's sold? EB/MM's or the person who paid for it. Seems a little controlling to me on the manufacturer's part.

Well, I see what you're saying, but I think it's more that they don't want to become a spare parts manufacturer, or deal with selling bits and pieces of the guitars out to the public. They don't really have the manpower for that, and it would be costly to get into that. The reason the Axis Sport line was discontinued was to make room on the line for the SUB Bass, so I think EB/MM's manufacturing capacity is stretched pretty thin - they can't just be selling off parts because they need them to build guitars. If you need a new neck, they'll install a new neck if you send 'em the guitar, but if you want a different neck, you'll have to find it elsewhere...

I completely understand the logic from a business standpoint. I guess I'm spoiled coming in here from the Baker camp where you could get whatever you wanted done. I realize EB isn't a custom guitar shop at this time and may not be able to go there. I'm looking forward to the first set neck EB/Baker either way.

Ain't that the truth. I'll admit that I was quite frustrated when I tried to get them to sell me a Luke with an Axis neck a few years back There are definitely advantages to the boutique guitar camp...
