Replacing nut on a StingRay

I'm about to embark on some experiments regarding strange and unusual string gauges, but before I attempt to remove any of the nuts on my StingRays, how are they affixed to the bass? What's the best way of removing the existing nut?

i would say a glue of some kind holds them on, but of this i am not certain.

A bit of mine snapped off (dont ask me how) as far as I could see they're glued on.

Any thoughts on removal/replacement? My new strings are coming in in a day or two...

I'd just use Dan Erlewine's advice as it's written. Well, to be honest, I'd probably take it to a luthier I trust
