Practice, practice, practice. Admittedly, I find it hard to play that song myself. Just wiggle your fingers about on the strings and hope some nice noise eventually comes out of the bass. :p

i shall tell you the three points of learning any musical passage in the world. they are as follows:
1. be the mp3. internalize the music, be able to hum it at will.

2. be the tab. know the music in and out in your sleep.

3. be the pacemaker. slow it down, be able to play it perfect slow, then speed it up slightly, repeat until you reach the songs tempo.

these are the three points that will help you learn this song. as stated by my bass teacher jason. these actually came strait out of my lesson book.

I learnt it, I started off slow and then worked my way up with the speed. It can be done, just takes practice.

Pedal, schmeddle, do me a favour!

Go listen to their live cover of Donna Summer's I Feel Love (Live in Hyde Park). Not the best cover ever, but proof that it can be done. They've also done Right on Time live - no pedal. And you should also see Parallel Universe, albeit with a pick.

Anyway, the REAL answer to your question is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Why listen to that when you can just listen to Right On Time, which is on the same album?

But yeah he definatly can play it live (no pedals or ****), i was standing on the barrier directly infront of him at Manchester this year, with my eyes glued to his fingers! I remember when they did right on time, there was a camera on flea's picking hand and you could see exactly what he was doing on the huge screens!

is the chorus "too fast" part?

i find it easier to play if i move around the A string instead of jumping from A - E. i got it that way first then started hopping from A to E.

Also ... this is cheesey, but you could play the chorus with a pick then drop it for the verse then grab another for the chorus etc etc

Flea has influenced me enough you won't see me try to play that song. :)

I finally found a 20 second clip of this, which includes the fast octave part. I used to practice 16th note root/fifth/octave variations all the time, so this line is pretty easy. Try practicing octave combinations all over the neck -- make up some cool practice patterns. After a while, this line will seem easy :) A couple of good right hand work out tunes are Rush's YYZ, Iron Maiden's Losfer Words (sp?), Jaco's Come on Come Over (of course Teen Town!), and Steve Morse's Cruise Missle (from The Introduction album). If you can play cleanly through all of those, you will have whipped your right hand into shape and you won't have any more trouble with Flea's fingered lines.

Guys this song is OUTRAGEOUSLY easy to play together with almost every 'post BloodSugarSExMagik' RHCP song!

The whole thing with octaves is to practice string changing. If you can't do that fast enough here's a trick:

Instead of playing the higher note twice(sounding like 'tum-ta-ta-tum') try and hit the three strings with an upstroke after the lowest note. It should sound sth like 'tum-tr-aum' which gives the impression that you play octaves VERY quickly.
