sanding my eb/mm?

i have a black silhouette that i was thinking of sanding down to the wood....now i wanna know just how much will this alter the sound of my guitar? i mean, i really like the way it sounds now and i know " if it aint broke dont try to fix it" but i like that natural looking.... a little oiled feel, like the neck. my other dilema is that i am not sure what the wood looks like underneath. i mean the grain of the wood could look like hell. like i said, its black paint and serial is 93970. i am not sure how well the records of eb/mm are. has anyone sanded down their guitar??? what are the pros and cons to it? thanks, mike

Chances are that your guitar is either poplar, ash or alder. From the serial # and the list I compiled Serial Numbers
Your guitar is around April or June of 1993. The June 93 one is mine and is ash. But this means nothing and I could talk to that but I will spare you the boredom. The upshot of the matter is EB did the research to find the best sounding finish. What I would suggest is find a good wood finish person and have them buff up your guitar to a new luster if necessary. If you must have a natural guitar, save up and get the one you really want. I wish they would offer the sil in an ash wood with a natural finish myself.
It's your guitar and no one can tell you what to do. IMHO I would suggest you do not do this.

thanks for the info norm. i saw someone playing an EBMM silhouette that was sanded down with a maple neck and black hardware. it looked really nice and that i what sparked my wondering. but i dont want to screw up the "sound" that i really like.

A guitar generally sounds better with no finish or just oil, it will 'breathe' and resonate better.[laquer was a preffered finish 'cos it could be applied thinner, and didn't 'lock up' the sound.]
Some guitars today with polymer or deltron finishes might as well be dipped in plastic.
Solid finished MMs' aren't checked for a good wood grain match, and are generally 3-piece bodies, which would likely not be so attractive.
All in all, MMs' have the thinnest and best looking polymer finishes in the buisiness.
