Serial number registry... a good idea?

Doesn't this just make it easier for someone to list a guitar they don't have on Ebay, etc?

I'd think this makes it too easy to include a legit-looking serial number in the description.

But what do I know?

Maybe the posts should only be visible to the moderator?

If you are going to purchase a guitar on E-Bay (or equivilent) you should always tread with caution, I'd be asking for photo's of everything including the serial number. The other option is to purchase from a reputable dealer, such as the guy's that post here. I do understand your concern though.

Max, I think that the Serial Number registry is a great idea. Look people are going to take advantage of a good thing and scam whatever they can.

It's good for this reason, NorM's buddy got one of NorM's Silo's stolen from his apartment. NorM went to the Serial Number databse and pulled the information for the police.

It's a good thing and meant to be used to assist people, not to be exploited, but there are those out there that might use it for that purpose. I personally hope it doesn't happen, but you never know when you are dealing with people these days.

I'm with Colin, you hear about a few people getting burned on EvilBay and you yourself become more cautious. Always get pictures and especially pictures of the serial number so it can be checked out.

i think it solves alot more problems than it creates......

Ask for a unique photo like the bridge with the seller holding up a peace sign. Having the data base at my disposal was really a comfort in getting the serial number to the police. It was the first thing on the report. That also insured that it got out to all the local pawn shops the next day. It's making insurance claim filing easier as well. If you are courious you could use the search function on this sight to see if it has ever been talked about here or just call EB with the number.

Sure there will always be scam artists out there and you can't control that. For all the good it does I think the serial number registery is a good thing.

I'm ashamed to say this, but I had a '95 sunburst Strat stolen a few years back. I'm ashamed because I didn't write the serial # down anywhere. Dumbass me. Now i have my Sil Spec (and it is a better guitar by far) but still mourn the loss of that Strat.
The registry is a great idea.
