I've been perusing several For Sale basses and I'm wondering what's the point of listing a serial number in this fashion: E058xx. What's the point of using x's? It's not as if we're talking about an SSN. What gives?

It's not unknown for some characters to use a real serial number in an attempt to claim the bass used to be theirs at one time, until it was "stolen", and use knowledge of the serial number as a way of convincing the authorities that the current owner is in possession of stolen property. The outcome can be that the first guy ends up with the bass if he can spin a good enough line of bull****. Often the rightful owner feels sorry for the person who had the bass "stolen", and sells it to them for a token amount (or gives it to them for free).
