Alright, I just saw a post about the guy that wants to put 10's on his Silo. Same thing with me, however my small question is wether the nut slots need to be widened (bigger) to compensate for the larger gauge? That's my small question concerning MM's.

NOW, my bigger question about a regular steel string guitar. I don't know if this is proper to post here, if not F it. I have a terrible Fender acustic guitar which I started out playing with. It did it's service, but it has been put out of commission due to extreme amount of fret buzz. The buzz is on mostly all the higher frets, but ALSO on the hi E and B strings when in tune, and when I fret another note, it goes completely out of pitch. I checked the relief on the neck, and that seems to be fine. My only guess is that the nut slots are worn out too much as well as the bridge possibly. Anyway, any suggestions on how I can fix it (For practice since I want to learn how to do good set ups and repairs :) )?

Roubster,

I wouldn't worry about the nut slots if you're only going up to 10's.

As for the acoustic, man I haven't a clue.. sorry. Hopefully Tommy can jump in.

going from 9 to 10's wont require any work done, I did it with my silo with no issues and I actually asked customer service and they said it wasnt a problem either so no worries....

Yeah..Going from 9's to 10's is fine with no work needed on the nutslots.

(it has been put out of commission due to extreme amount of fret buzz. The buzz is on mostly all the higher frets)

look at the fingerboard around the 14th fret.....or where the body meets the neck . i'm betting the buzzing starts at the13 or 14 fret??? there is often a hump developed where the neck meets the fingerboard.

(when I fret another note, it goes completely out of pitch. I checked the relief on the neck, and that seems to be fine. My only guess is that the nut slots are worn out too much as well as the bridge possibly.)

assuming your strings are fresh.....it sounds like your intonation is wacked....or your fretting out.
check your intonation by usin a capo just behind the first fret. this eliminates the nut. tune to pitch...then measure how acurate your pitch is w/ a tuner as you progessivly fret notes up the neck. for example....open high e.....then press the 13th fret & check the e there....
also..make sure the bridge saddle is still in good contact with all the strings.

this really difficult to do w/out me being able to look at the guitar.......... as there are ALOT of combination of things that could equal your symtoms....

Thanx for the help guys. Tommy, all of the things you said are probably right, but were you actually reffering to an electric guitar? Because this problem I have on the acustic. I have no idea how you would go about doing intonation on that or anything else for that matter, except adjusting truss rod and changing strings. Anyway, it's not a good acustic anyway, so I don't think I am gonna waste my time with it. Thanx anyway guys.
