Should I go for this?

A work colleague has a Fender American Deluxe Precision which he's had for like 4 months, played 4 times and decided to out it & get a Jaco tribute.

He paid £900+ for it and is willing to let me have it @ £500 in 5 instalments.

He's also letting me try it out while he's on holiday for 2 weeks. I'm thinking get it anyway & if I don't like it, sell it, hopefully for at least £500!

So - what say you?

He also has a '78 Ray, but sadly it isn't up for grabs.

that would be a nice deal, and like you said, if you don't like i,, you can always sell it (it should be possible for 500)

Personally I don't care for Fenders. I've owned several and all seemed to have hot and dead spots on the neck. Plus I've always thought that they just sound dull. Just MHO. Watch for a good deal on a Music Man (Again MHO).

I used to own a 97 Fender American deluxe P-bass before I had my Stingray, I like to call those the dark years lol. Anyway I loved the feel and looks of the thing (it was a vintage sunburst, shell pg and maple neck, gorgeous lookin thing) but I was never satisfied with the sound. I must say that it did sound great with a pick, but Im mainly a finger player and it always just sounded to blah when i played fingerstyle. Just from my experience with one I wouldnt spend my money on it, but if you played it and it suits you, by all means go for it, 500 is cheap for a American deluxe series, just make sure you give it a good run before you buy.

not much beets the classic vintage jazz basses...they sound so amazing and feel great

I love Pbasses basses and have a number of them.Classic sound. They are not consistant though so try out the bass before you buy.I think everybody should have at least one Pbass.

I played a p-bass for about 20 years. I have a '79 tobacco SB that I played until I got the 'ray. It's a good bass, but nowhere near as good as my MusicMan.

One of the first basses I ever laid hands on was a white Fender P-bass. I don't know any details about that because it was Way before I was bass literate. I know it was falling appart though, and I still keep the A and D string that came off on my key chain. I do so love the Pbass.

Try it out. If it floats your boat man, it doesn't really matter what company it is. And if it plays and feels good And it's at a good deal... Why not? All the power to ya.

Thanks people, I appreciate the input.

I already have a 2nd 'Ray, but thought if this was any good I could use it. Most interesting comment is about pick use - I'm a 100% finger player so maybe it won't suit my style.

I'm also considering an upright (don't tell the missus, she'll freak!), so maybe my £500 could go on that instead.....
