Big Ginger Git, I guess it comes down to a few things.

1. Rosewood or Maple fret board
2. Pricing must be less for the SS
3. Active or Passive pickups
4. Color scheme

I don't own a Luke, but I own a SS. Listen to everybodies opinions and use that as info to make the best decision that's right for you.

Best of luck, Glenn |B)

Cheers Glenn,
Fingerboards would be the same in rosewood, I agree the SS will be cheaper, I've never tried EMG's, and the colour I love most is Pete's SS.

I play mostly rock (melodic hard rock), blues and like to play clean too with the odd jazz standard or ballad and I'm sure both guitars could handle all of this.

Is the Luke worth the extra cash ? or is it extra just for the EMG's when it boils down to it ?

Keep the comments, hints, tips and advice coming guys

:D ;)

Hi Ainsley,

I responded to your e-mail and will send extra pics tomorrow.

I'll try and be as impartial as possible on the Luke Vs SS question. EMG's are a love them or hate them type affair. I've heard some guys for whom that clarity and focus in sound really suits their style. There's a guy from THD amps (I own a Flexi-50) called Ed DeGenaro who has some clips on the web using EMGs and he sounds great. But they're not for me - far too sterile and exposing for my style and technique!!;)

With the Luke you are paying extra for the name association, the v-shaped neck and the EMGs. Now, to me, those are quite subjective advantages (I don't like Steve Lukather, prefer the C-shaped neck on my SS and don't like EMGs). If they work for you, then great, go for the Luke. But for a couple of hundred less (going by the E-Bay auctions) you could buy my SS and a set of EMGs!!

Ok, so I lost my impartiallity towards the end there!! ;)

I owned a silouhette special, first with the original kit, the I put a EMG SA/89 kit...

now I play a luke 2...

for me the luke is really better, the V neck is really FAST and the EMG SL20 sounds sweet, warm and very bright...of course it is still totally NOISLESS ! and with this new EMG kit you can use your volume knob without "loosing" all the sound...

well the SS is clearly going to be an easier guitar to swap pups in and out and to change pickguards and stuff, plus the v shape neck causes pain in some people. for me I like the look of the pickguard and I also needed to lower the middle pup because I scrape it while strumming, on the luke the pups are screwed into the body so there is no lowereing or raising the pups. SS is my vote but youll be happy with either -

I own a Luke 2 and I think it is awesome. The emg's are awesome especially if you are playing heavier music. Their clarity and noisefree operation are rivaled by none. A lot of players don't like them for the same reason because they are not forgiving at all. The slv single coils in the luke are by far the warmest sounding single coils i have ever heard.
