Question Single coil pickup on Stingray HS

I've searched and haven't found any comments throughout the site. I'm looking at buying a Stingray HS and was wondering for those who like to use the pickups as a thumb rest, if the single coil pickup, since it's basically a round screw on top is uncomfortable versus say a flat Jazz bass pickup.

Second, short of getting a J bass, is the HS any better than the HH at getting close to a J bass sound? Not why I'm interested in a Stingray, but wanted to know which might be more comfortable and versatile. Thanks.

the single coil is a fine and comfortable thumb rest, no issues here at all.

sound wise, you really need to hear that. It is not a dramatic difference, but there certainly is a difference, and when played with both pickups full on you can definitely hear the difference between otherwise similar instruments.
Close to a J sound? I don't think so. Neither pulls that sound off. One of the best characteristics of EBMM instruments is that they unmistakably sound like a MM bass. Even the Big Al with three single coils (you can somewhat mimic the J's configuration with it) will still sound like a MM bass.

that's good imo :)

Imo the single H style pickup makes for a better thumb rest then the dual pickup covers.

As for your 2nd question, hh or hs will both do 2 single coils. (Like the j-bass) advantage with the HH model is that you can choose the inner or outer coils wich give you 2 verry distinct sounds. Outer coils is verry mid-scooped. To me it sounds like a verry hot-rodded j-bass. But as said above. It will sound like a stingray in all modes, wich is a good thing! :)

The HS pickup is very comfortable to use as a thumbrest. It is scooped/beveled nicely for your thumb and the screws are recessed so your thumb doesn't even make contact with the screw. To me the Musicman HS pickup is much more comfortable than the typical jazz pickup. You will not be disappointed.

Keep in mind that dual pickup Stingrays (HS &HH) have this type of pickup cover but single pickup Stingrays have the a more traditional rounded tab cover.

Thank you for your inputs. Relative to SLO Special necks which I see some of you have, do you know if these are made in the US MM factory with the Stingray bodies?

Yes they are. Exactly the same precess as the non-slo necks. But a different cnc program for routing the neck.

Prehumps it behoofs us to point out the that here
we avoid the tendonitis provoked by typing out a
lengthy phrase like "the US MM factory" ... so we
just type "SLO".

So would it make any sense to call something the
"SLO Special" if it were built any place other than
SLO ? Nuffsedd :-)

The MM single coils don't sound like J-bass singles, and that's a good thing. You get a nice juicy single coil sound, done MusicMan style--it has the unmistakeable MusicMan DNA in the sound.

Thanks Golem. Sorry for the excessive descriptor. Prehumps I'm relatively new. Two questions for you, again excuse my ignorance and voluminous carpel tunnel inducing activity. 1) Is this forum for both Middle-earth as well as surface dwellers and 2) do you find the climate there requires frequent neck adjustments?

1) Fender American Precision
2)Fender Mustang
3) Orc custom catapult with J-bass pickups and reinforced Kevlar netting
3) Soon one Music Man American Made Stingray 4 H, BB SLO Special from CA, USA surface earth.

Hope to see you at the convention!
