Hello all, fairly new to the forum but have played several Stingrays over the years. My new addition to the family is a beautiful natural HS with maple board that had a white pickguard which I changed out for a shell. I was quite surprized to see another pickup sunk underneath the guard for the "phantom" coil. I know some pickup manufacturers like Nordstrand put their extra coil underneath the pickup and am real curious how this works. What would have happened if both coils were exposed? Is this a real pickup? Can someone explain the concept of this? If its just for hum-cancelling isn't there another way? I love the sound of this bass and just trying to understand the genius at work here. Cudos to EB - this bass is a homerun!

It works.

Someone in Talkbass raised the pickup and had a special PG made for it. :)

You'll end up losing the single coil solo position and gain a S+H sound.

I recall a thread that discussed this in great detail a year or so ago. If you haven't already, you may want to try a search.
