SR5 - SR4 - not at all same sound!!

Hey,

I have a great SR5 with 3 band EQ - I love this sound. So I just got a 4 string with 3 band EQ - both basses have maple fretboard and same strings.

However the SR4 sounds completely different from SR5. The SR4 sounds much more "tuby", whereas SR5 sounds more crisy.

Both basses have EQ's at neutral position.

Anyone knows why they sound SO different? And which sounds is supposed to me most "musicman" classic?

They sound different, because they are different instruments.
Would you like everything EB/MM makes to sound the same?

Be nice Jon....If you want a four stringer to sound most like a SR5 the Sterlingis the bass foryou!

If you get an early SR5 it can come closer to a SR4 tone as the pickups were alnico. They use ceramic magnets since '92 and so do the Sterling basses, so they will sound similar compared to the alnico equipped SR4 basses.

Yes sir. ceramic and alnico pickups sound a little bit different to my ears (of course, the only way to tell it's by doing a side by side testing, just like you did)

BP is right. The Sterling is way closer in sound to the SR5. Sorry if I came off sounding pissed or whatever.

BTW, I enjoy the differences between my SR4 and my SR5. Learn to embrace the differences. And all that other new-age stuff.

So they are indeed different. I thought I had go a bad SR4...

So what can I do? I came to love the SR5 sound - but SR4 is the original Stingray sound...

Maybe a Sterling 4 will be next bass then??

Ok. Today I bought a brand new red Sterling 4. This bass is just the right for me - great slap and fingered sound, warm and snappy..

I put flatwounds on my Stingray 4 now - so these two basses will be my main axes now.

I traded in the Stingray 5 to get the Sterling...but 5 strings never did it for me..
