So what happened I thought I read that the stingray 5 was going to be debuted at the Aneheim show? Did they mean next years Aneheim show? Or is it just taking longer than expected to get that bass into its final and ready-for-sale state?
Or was it all just a joke and I didn't read the thread where that was revealed?

The Sterling 5 is being geared for a Summer NAMM release in Austin. But there has been nothing really officially put out there yet.

Youth just spoke!

we will let you know when we "dig" ourselves out of this. Or we will try to present a new 5 string bass at the Austin show.

I always thought of the Stingray5 as a Sterling in SR skin. Well, if they come out with a "true" SR5 then I guess I have to buy that as well. Nothing wrong about that.

heres my idea, BP, Normal SR5s (single pup) have the series/single/parallel option. Multi pups dont, they are just wired in parallel. Will the new 5er (whether its called a Sterling or something entirely different) have not only coil switcing ability, but be able to switch the wiring like sterlings and normal sr5s?

Heh heh.

I've been thinking about this "Sterling 5" concept since the night BP said to Dargin on the phone, "I want to make a Sterling 5!"

And Dargin, who is no doubt accustomed to such things, made soothing noises. "Okay, sure, a Sterling 5...."

"No, write it down. I want to do it", says Biff, and I'm sure Dargin wrote it down.

So what did we know and when did we know it? No, wait, when we knew it is not a big deal here. A downsized body, okay. And then what?

If we're talking about a more "Stingray-ish" fiver, there already is one. It's the SUB fiver. Sure, you could update the finish and spend more time on the details, but let us remember that Biff is not one for repeating what he's already done.

(Why do I have the feeling that he's going to thrash me for this? I so rarely get involved in speculation or what COULD be done. I'm probably insane.)

So 5 string basses. You got your standard SR5, the new dual pickup models, the SUBs, the Bongos.....jeez, where are we going with this?

If you aren't going to plug Bongo electronics into something non-Bongo, I have to admit - I'm at a loss.

If it were me, and it's not, and I always remember that, I'd maybe say, "Okay, it was a thought."

Or I'd consider taking that SUB 5 program on the CNC machine and changing it just a little bit, then putting the end result through the regular production finishing stages instead of the toned-down SUB production process. I'd load it up with the most innovative electronics package since the 50s - the Bongo pickups and preamp.

And I'd paint that mofo Logan Green. Then I'd sit in my office and make those evil laughing noises like Snidely Whiplash.

Okay, Biff, I'm ready for my spanking now.

That's pretty much what I was trying to say with the 18V pre an 2 band-mids comment;)

But if you're going to go 18v, then why handcuff it with a 2 band pre?

On another note, Biff feels more comfortable spanking me, so he'll let you get away with it. Me? Oh, I'm in deep kimshi, but in for a penny, in for a pound.

Picture it. The basic Stingray shape, yes? Like the SUB 5. And the Stingray pickguard. Now add the 18v pre with 4 band and maybe even limit it to one pickup configuration. A single hummer or double hummer, either way is good. Take your pick. Oil and wax neck with maple or rosewood option. No textured finish, baby - hot and shiny and Logan Green!

You guys probably don't realize what a load of shiite I'm in for with this, but hey, it's late and what else do I have to do?

Okay, Biff, I'm ready for my punishment, sir.

:D

I managed to get a picture of the Sterling 5 prototype. As you can see, the pickup pole alignment issue has been resolved. Don't even ask about the electronics!

I'm really serious Sterling... I'll order one now sight unheard....

and ya, what I've been mulling over is that the neck might be to the SR5 what the Sterling is to the SR... possibly a bit more sleek, thin like a Bongo but not as wide and yes, I'm betting it'll have an oval p/g with rear-routed electronics. But none the less it'll kick ass. I gotta tell ya, I've been jonesin' for single coils lately but tonight we started/recorded the first of 2 night's live recordings and the sound of my Bongo's 'bumhuckers' and my buddy's SR5 humbuck.... damn.....(but I do want to explore the coil tapping of the new dual H Rays and Sterling  )
anywho............
Austin....could get me some more Rudy's and a Sterling5...... hmmmm......... :p

Jack!!!
Seriously, the 18volt 2 band boost-only Aggie pre I've got is nuts, really, no handcuffing involved .It's a remarkably voiced pre and WORKS GREAT WITH MUSICMAN BASSES  the amount of a booty ~any~ 18volt 2 band pre would offer is huge so it'd be cool if Dudley's cooked up an 18volt 2 band

...in all seriousness though, go to GC or someplace and check out and out-board Ag. 2 band eq. box, it is a nice piece to have in the camp.
