I recently was able to pickup and AX4 in black translucent finish. Mine has a locking Floyd Rose tremelo and has a locking nut. When I try to look this up for information most of the AX4's I see don't have the locking nut. Is there an official model number for this? Also I've read where these were made for Ernie Ball and in fact mine has the original plastic film on the tremelo cover that has a sticker that says "All Instruments Inspected Set-Up and Shipped from Orange, CA.-USA". It must have been stored in a closet because it still had the plastic film in the neck pickup. I'm trying to figure the original string gauge this shipped with so I can have it setup again. There are a few frets that could use a little dressing on the sides. But other than that it's a gem..
Thanks
Mark

The AX4 with a locking nut and Floyd Rose tremolo is less common, but it might have been a variant or a special edition. The sticker indicates it was inspected and set up in Orange, CA, which aligns with how these guitars were originally handled under Sterling by Music Man. For the string gauge, most of these shipped with 9-42 strings as standard, but it’s a good idea to confirm based on the Floyd Rose setup. If you're planning to have it set up, let the tech know your preferred gauge to ensure the tremolo system stays balanced. A light fret dressing should bring it back to perfection!
