Stingray 3EQ Battery Compartments

Hello everyone,

I'm shopping for yet another Stingray 3EQ 4H. The one I am looking at seems fine in the photos apart from the fact I have spotted there is a double 9v battery compartment at the rear. A.J. says the bass was born in Dec 2004 and the colour and neck are correct according to EB records. I've not seen a stock Stingray with two battery compartments. Any ideas what's going on?

It has no LED's fitted that I am aware of and it doesn't have a piezo pickup. Also, it definitely looks like a double battery compartment rather than two singles next to each other.

I'm too far from the bass for personal inspection.

this might be part of an aftermarket preamp...? you should ask seller for pictures of the pickup and preamp board.

Yes, I think you could be right. I've messaged the seller for photo's. I'll update this when I know more.

A deal breaker for you then?
I think I've read somewhere, possibly here, that a few people have tried them with an 18v pre-amp and the general consensus is that there is no real benefit. The other issue of course is that if it does have an after market pre-amp, it doesn't appear to come with the original, so I wouldn't be able to change it back.

Hi - I could be wrong but that looks very similar to a Bongo battery compartment but located in the SR4H position. It would be interesting to know what pre amp it contains. Would a single pick up Bongo one fit the SR control route? Curious anyway.

Although you could retro fit the correct SR4 parts owing to the wider battery box routing you would be lumbered with a body repair job - so I guess it's a modified Ray forever - there must be better SR4s out there if you want a stock one - although that is a cool colour.

I've just been informed, much to the current owners surprise, that it has an Aguilar OBP-3 fitted. He hadn't noticed the push/pull on the control panel. What to do now.

Pass on it if you want a real sr4. If you are not concerned about originality then this may be a good bass if the price is right of course...

There is a white/maple sr4 round my way for sale. As far as I know the guy has fitted a Status neck but will take the status back off and fit the original maple neck back on. It's in good nick apart from one ding on the body and apart from the status neck it's all original.

What's your budget and I'll get his details for you.
