Does anyone know what type of "special wax blend" Ernie Ball uses on the Stingray necks? I want to be able to reapply some to the neck and wonder if it is something special or just regular paste wax or what. They describe the neck finish as-

Gunstock oil and hand-rubbed special wax blend
 
How to care for your neck:

1. Sand it smooth with 600 wet or dry sandpaper backed by a rectangular eraser. If there are any dents in the back of the neck you can raise them with steam by putting the edge of a damp terrycloth towel over the dent and then iron it with the tip of a hot iron. The steam will raise the dent. Simply sand the neck smooth after you raise the dents.

2. Dip one finger tip in Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil and rub the oil into the neck with your clean hands. You can get the Tru-Oil at a gun store. Use just enough oil to cover the neck and wipe all excess off the neck.

3. Put the bass in a stand with the fingerboard toward the stand and allow it to dry complelely. This usually takes 1 to 2 days.

4. If the neck has more shine than you want, gently polish it with 0000 Steel Wool.

5. After the gunstock oil, EB also recommends Birchwood-Casey Tru-Wax, but I like mine just fine right now.
 
Bovine, thanks much. Sounds like you've had experience with these. Hardest part for me will be the 1-2 day wait while the oil dries (I only have one Ray to work with....snif).
 
How often

How often should you apply this to the neck? Once a year? Every few years? Does the Tru-Oil by itself offer enough protection? I love the feel of the neck the way it is and would hate to change things significantly.

Once a year is what I've heard. I haven't had the Tru-Oil on for that long, so we'll see how it wears.

Although the wax is recommended and someday I'll try it, a few coats of the gunstock oil with a bit of steel wool between coats feels plenty slick to me.
 
Neck Finish

Anyone got any advice for an alternative neck finish, for players in the UK with no access to Gun shops?
