Once upon a time in the land of Oz there lived a bass player who had a problem with intruments.
Although he loved his '77 SR4 he'd had since new and restored to wonderful condition he wanted a bass to use for fun, so he could ding it and not cry.
He bought a lovely CIJ J bass in candy apple red which was just like the ones he used to stare at for hours as a young teenager through large plate glass windows. All seemed well.
But then news reached Oz that in a far off land across the big ocean, revered luthiers were constructing exotic basses with unheard of playability and sounds.
Indeed shortly afterwards a spiritual virtuoso called VW arrived in Oz and briefly frightened the natives. A monarch bolt-on was duly despatched to Oz and (although at great expense) it was superior to what had been seen before.
A year passed but the restlessness did not.
'Fretless' was the word that wouldn't go away. Then came '5 string'. Dilemma.
The electronic bay might provide the solution but not at the prices being asked for monarchs relatives. Nice but . . .
An SR5 in lavender pearl! Yes that'll do. The SR4 was the best on the market in '77so a recent SR5 might do? Better than expected and wonderful tone and neck.
Shortly afterwards a fretless neck appeared for sale and was purchased.
There followed several mesages in bottles and carrier pigeons to Dan the Medicine Man in faraway Obispo. What a hero! Tuners and other silverware to appease the hungry native.
Everything fit together as if made for each other and wonderous mwah-like sounds echoed around sub-tropical Oz. Happiness!
Word reached Oz that a new epidemic was rife in the land of Dan. GAS it was called and it's likely it will reach Oz at some stage soon.
Until then the native lives in peace . . . .
PS the action with Ken Smith Slickrounds is 1/16" all the way across and G has great mwah. Any tips for getting more out of A and D please?
