I have a Ernie Ball Stingray IV, Ampeg SVT-3 PRO and cab, and a Zoom 708-II pedal. I recently bought a BBE Sonic Maximizer (I love it). I have been trying to replicate the bass tone like that heard on the Fixx's "Red Sky at Night." It's kind of a metallic, deep, bass tone. Can anyone tell me what it takes to make that unique tone?

Sounds to me like he's using a pick to pound some Rotosound roundwounds, with the treble turned all the way up on his bass. My Rickenbacker 4001 has that exact sound.
