Has anyone here installed a forward thumb rest on thier Stingray. Ive been thinking of getting a Stingray and would like to install a thumb rest between the pickup and the neck. I know the guy from Disturbed did it with his and Ive seen a few pics around on the internet, but Im kind of looking for a diagram or something to show a good place to put it. I spose I could measure and go halfway between the pickup and neck and choose a spot that I find comfortable. Any comments? Thanks.
 
I've never used one, nor even see a use for one with my style, so I can't really comment too much. I would worry less about where it might "normally" be, and place it where it feels right.

I would hate to be tied down to just one spot on a thumbrest. I play 5 string and usually use the low B for a thumbrest. Sometimes the little ramp on the top of the humbucker. Allows for more tonal variations IMO.

Guys! Guys! I was wondering about this issue myself a while ago when I stumbled upon this picture in Rod's picture gallery!

See that pickguard?! According to Rod, those holes aren't only there for a nifty cosmetic look, but act also as thumbrests!!! :eek: :eek: :eek: Spector, you said something about being limited to one place? That PG has many holes for any thumbrest desire thing! :D ;)

So I'm actually wondering if "armatronix" (owner of this bass) did this him/herself or had it customed. Maybe Brian Bootz is behind this! :p

"armatronix" used to work at EB and was involved with the Bongo Bass. I believe he did the work himself :cool:

So how'd armatronix do that anyway? Just cut the PG with an exacto knife or something?
 
The PG of my Sterling is in the store for customizing it like armatronix's one they're gonna use special drills he said...but he didn't had em at the moment so it could take some time...(Its about 3 weeks now :( ) It's a black PG on a black sterling though but you CAN see the white line of the 3-piece PG..also i'ts not all the same(I think fewer holes cuz the Sterling PG is smaller...)
Later I'm hoping to find a tort pickguard and let do the same with it :)
I will post some picks when I got it back from the store but when ???:confused:

Hmmmm...........I've got the original black p/g for my SR5..........maybe I'll try using a big drill bit and not go all the way thru........should make a beveled edge.........Hmmmm

Or, you could simply develop a floating thumb playing style, but that's just me... ;)

Ok I did get a call from the store with some good and bad news...
Good news : He finished my pickguard and it looked awesome he said...
Bad news : He REALY finished it (as in broke it) with the last hole he drilled the pickguard broke + a bloody finger...
He was gonna order a new pickguard and do it again ..

But thats not that bad as I ordered a tort pickguard instead in wich he can drill those holes
Black Sterling + tort pickguard + holes = :D :D :D

I will post some pics of the "finished" pickguard om the Sterling and the Broken one !!

Ok they're not quality pix,but you get the idea ;)
Credit to "Strings & Things music" store Antwerp Belgium for the custom job (not only the holes but the whole PG :) )
