i need to kno before i shell out some big bucks for these strings

Like go dead, you mean? No one knows.

Really, I read a little story about a guy who had his for four years, switched them from one bass to another numerous times, all the silks had begun to unravel and they still sounded good.

But finally he had to admit they weren't intonating quite right after all the abuse, so....anecdotal evidence points to about four years.

I certainly don't know. Before the strings get old, I usually trade or sell the bass.

I'm surprised you even get a chance to change the strings on some of them!
