My first venture into 5 string basses (well REAL 5 string basses) was my Ray 5 HS that J got roughly 2 years ago. I waited 4 months for the delivery and it was well worth it.
I played it a lot at home before venturing out to try and get used to the B string. I'm getting there....but the past 2 years have been SUPER busy and I've been gigging my goto Ray 4 H.
Anyway, the strings were SUPER dead. Still the stock EB strings.
I also noticed a slight wolf note on the open G string (correct term?!). But I knew that was just setup/string.
Anyway, today it got a new set of EB Reg Slinkys and a fresh battery.
OH MY! The basics REALLY do make a different. It feels easier to play, the wolf note has gone, and the bass has come alive. Cranking the treble makes it snarl like crazy.
In addition, all of the pup positions again sound very distinct...whereas as you'd expect, with 2 year old strings, you lose a lot of the EB tone.
Maybe the old battery was on the wayout as well, so I've given it two treats tonight.
Absolutely love this bass! If in doubt, change the strings and/or battery!
