I currently have a SUB 4 Active which I like and which I intend to keep for sentimental reasons. I do however have a desire for a Stingray 4 and wondered what anybody thought about my craving. Would it be worth the cost of the Stingray to have a bass which is not hugely different from the SUB or am I wrong to presume that their are not siginificant differences. Sorry for being a pain but I would appreciate your thoughts.
 
ive never played a SUB, but I hear they are awesome basses ... however, i do ahve experience with the SR4 and can, with no doubt, say its awesome +6.

i just got an SR4 HH and that thing ... wow, that thing might be the best bass ive ever played/heard EVER!

i say try out the SR4 HH at your local music store and decide for yourself ... dont forget your credit card :) honestly, it will blow u away
 
If you can afford it, buy it. Never can have enough quality musical instruments in your life. Like an education, it is an intangible investment

If you already have a SUB Stingray, then maybe get a Stingray 5 with piezo, or maybe even a Sterling. Or look into a vintage Stingray.

I've only played a SUB twice, but IMHO there is a significant difference in the sound. I was wondering about the same thing as you are - the SUB is a fine bass - but the stingray blew away all my hesitation in about 20sec! It's truly avesome and well worth the money ;)
The difference in cost is equal the difference in tone & feel IMHO :cool:

I'd check out the 2pup stingrays also
 
I am using a SUB right now but its passive so i cant comment on the sound from passive to active but the feel is different believe it or not. I just bought a stingray 4 stringer and to me the neck feels a lot better then the SUB neck, the contour of the body sitting down and practicing feels more comfortable. Balance wise the stingray beats the SUB hands down. Both are great basses but to me the stingray feels like the real deal and the SUB is like a workhorse. For the extra money you spend you will notice the difference in the body and neck. The SUB is going to get sold and the stingray stays. If you like nice gear then the stingray 4 or 5 will suit you. Although i would advise against selling the SUB if you get a ray, especialy if its your first bass. After a few years i recently re-aquired my first bass from the guy i sold it to. Its a good feeling to have your first bass.
 
There's a big difference in sound, as soon as you A/B them next to each other. The ray has a lot more bass and low mids to the sound.

Have a look at a HH Ray, it's worth every penny

Man,

I wish I felt the same way about my first bass. But it was a Gibson/Epiphone Jazz-style bass. Looking back on it, I must say that it was pretty bad.:o Yuck!

i like the feel of the SUB, and the tone is average, better than alot of other basses i have played, but that is the reason i want a real stingray.

So I have these two Guild Pilots, EMG PJ PUs, poplar bodies, supersonic necks, 7.5lb each. Love them to death. Then I stumble on a 'Super Pilot': Same shape, same bridge, tuners, neck-profile, but ....
solid fancy maple body, ebony FB with binding and large inlays, Bart PJs with additional EQ band, heavier, and .... damnt thing cost more than the pair of standard Pilots combined. Bought it. No regrets. And I have no plans to part with the much plainer poplar bodies "SUB" versions.
 
Keep the SUB

I have an active SUB 4 that I love. The sound is amazing. If you want a change, call EB customer service and replace the pickquard. But whatever you do, don't dump the SUB!
