Just got done ordering a set of EB 5 string flats for my SR5 from Musicians Friend. Im taking a gamble as Ive never tried flats but really just wanted to try something different. Im looking for a smoother more even textured sound and Im hoping these will supply. If not it was still worth the experience. :D

I'll never own at least one bass again without flats on it.

The EB flats will be staying on my single H trans red SR5 for a few years.

I'm sorry but that made me chuckle...dropping what $30 on a set of strings does not constitute a "plunge" to me. As a string dealer I get tons of emails from customers asking me all sorts of questions about comparing how set A compares with set B and so forth and many of those questions are subjective matters of opinion. Some "string tweakers" have sent me multiple page emails with so many questions to answer it would take me hours to write back to cover them all properly and would far exceed my $5.00 or so profit I'd make on the sale in time expended and they'd still only have my personal subjective opinion on them.

String tweakers are the worst man...just buy the damned things and you tell me the differences between set A or Set B. A set of strings is not exactly a big ticket item or "plunge" ya know??

Not directed at you personally...just a general soapbox pet peave rant.
 
Steve's right. And if you end up liking the flats, that 30 bucks will last you 5 or 10 years, which makes flats quite good value in anybody's language (yes, even Canadian).

No probs man. However 30 bucks (or im my case 45 in all) is a big deal and a plunge to me at the moment. I dont make a ton of money and have the luxury to buy multiple sets of strings and basses and whatnot on a whim, and with a baby on the way things are even tighter so I have to be carefull with what I spend what little enjoyment money I have on. I agree that it is definitely not your job to educate customers on what string works best and what doesn't. Strings IMO are an experimentation thing and the buyer should just have to live with the consequences of whether or not they like them.

Understood and appreciated...just giving another viewpoint on the subject from another perspective is all. FWIW....tons of players actually seek out used/broken-in flats so if you don't like them someone will probably trade you a set of used rounds or maybe even buy them from you...unlike rounds which get worse as they get played, flats get better with age in most people's opinions.
 
Thanks for the info man, I really hope I do like them, most of the music Im into with a few exceptions was played using flats and I dont know why Ive never tried a set.

Don't worry BP I probably will still change these out every 3 months or so if I like them. I like thump but I dont want my strings to be totally lifeless.

Hehe yeah. After rereading my own post I realize that I have no idea what im talking about :rolleyes: :D

I have no idea what to expect out of these strings. Its kind of exciting!!

Tell me about it BP...but I still sell a bunch of those flats with the red silks on em because these guys forget to change the strings when they sell or trade the bass which they do often enough anyway.

Don't worry Poppa, some of us guitards change strings weekly! We'll keep you supplied with Ketel One and meats for your outdoor kitchen! :D

I got into that habit years ago. A good friend of mine who is probably one of the best guitarists I've ever heard.. he used to buy Super Slinky strings by the box and change them every couple of days. I had never heard of anyone buying strings in such quantities before, most guys I knew changed strings when one or more of 'em broke. Seeing such a great player put such emphasis on changing strings got me thinking.
 
You mean there are other strings besides (E.B.) flats? :eek:

What kind of world are we living in?
