Trem Post Lube?

Do any of you guys add any kind of lube to your guitars trem posts to make it operate smoother. I've heard of people using vaseline and lip balm(chapstick) of all things. Do any of you guys use a lubricant and if so, what do you use?

Chapstick is the best I've ever used. I usually use it on my Strats and Edge Pro (Ibanez) and Floyd Rose trems. I've never needed it for my JP trem, though. What trem are you thinking of using it on?

I put it on when I occasionally pull the trem from the guitar for neck cleaning, but that is strictly for my Floyd type guitars. On my Fenders I just rotate the trem post a half turn and apply it, then rotate it back. It really does work, but most new trems of any type with good knife edges usually won't need it.

Chapstick can also make an excellent nut and saddle lube, as well. I keep two sticks of it on my workbench at all times.

I've never heard of Chapstick over here - I'll have to Google it!!

I had noises from my AL trem, and I got a can of WD40 and squirted some (through the tube you get with the can) onto the trem posts. Really small amount - about a gnats mouthfull.

You'd swear that it had been blessed by the man on high (Jonguitarz!!) - problem solved - no problem since.

Silly ol' me I re read your post Chapstick = Lip balm !! I'd never have guessed to use that.

Try Permatex Ultra-Slick. It's a synthetic lubricant with PTFE (Teflon) which shouldn't gum things up, and actually has longer term benefits, as the PTFE penetrates the metal and keeps things running smoothly for longer.

Lumberjack: CarQuest carries the Permatex line up here in Canada. I had to special order the gel at the store i visited (all they had was the spray) but it was in their warehouse and came in the next day.

Gotta agree with that. Chapstick might work for a short period of time, but it's not a lubricant...

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info. I was actually thinking of putting something on my Axis SS and my Ibanez RGT42. But wanted some advice before doing anything.

I didn't think about WD40. That stuff is a wonder product.

A buddy of mine told me about a website for a product called Big Bends Nut Sauce.....I know, funny name.

I've been meaning to try nut sauce as well. (It's just graphite for the nut, though, not the trem.)

Scott- if you find any in TO let me know where you got it? Capsule Music on Queen is supposed to have the stuff but never does.

Hey Beej.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same product because it says nothing in the website description as being a graphite or liquid graphite of any kind. The link in my post above your post goes to the website. See if it's the same thing.

Apparantly, a review I've read says it can be used on nut slots, bridge saddles and trem pivot points.

I'll have to ask my buddy, Mike, at the 12th Fret and another shop I go to because I'm sure they can get WD Music stuff.

I haven't used it, but it's been described to me as "graphite in vasoline". I know some guys here make their own concoctions based on that.

Yeah- if you do find a source please give me a holler!
