Hi everyone!

Generally I'm over on the bass part of this forum, tho some of the guys there recommended I come over here and ask you lot a question.

I'm really keen on getting a MM bass asap, and I am under BP's instructions to convert my hubby too! SO I am here for advice on 6 stringers. He currently has a strat copy and a Les Paul and is looking at getting a Tele, a real Strat and an SG - perhaps some other ones too. Are there are MM guitars that would make particularly good substitues for the above? We are children of Britpop so a lot of Oasis, Beatles ( I know they're not Britpop but Oasis rip them off so much!) etc gets played in our house. But we also like bands such as Razorlight, White Stripes, the Strokes and Greenday.

Any suggestions anyone? And any stories from people who have converted from one of the aforementioned guitars to a MM would be welcome ammunition - provided you're happy with your MM that is! :D

Oh and Norrin Radd (I recognise you from the Orange forums!) any advice on a guitar that would sound great through an AD30HTC (his ideal purchase) would be great!

show him a picture of the new y2d morse coming out in purple sunset. just looks alone should do it........but you can also tell him the guitar is quite possibly the best sounding guitar EVER BUILT ANYWHERE ...WITH THE SWEETEST NECK HE EVER FELT !!!!!
if THAT doesn't work......well you can always try the tried & true method that seems to work so well in this country......CUT HIM OFF !!!!!!!!!!

Well I have only had a Strat to compare my Silo too, so I can say the EBMM beat the hell out of the Strat on every level - from playability to quality of build etc.

Here is a link from an excellent store and pro shop in Toronto that might help. These guys are consummate professionals -Liona Boyd used to get her classical guitars set up by them

Based on what hes looking to add to his collection he should consider a Silhouette or Albert Lee. Both come in a variety of pickup configurations that should suit him and bring him into the clan!

Why buy overpriced mass produced when you can buy quality and individualism...

Personally I play an Axis and love it...my US fend*r strat never gets a look in these days.

Oh man, Tommy, that's just wrong!

If the hubby likes his strat copy you might have him give a Silhouette Special a try. Very nice guitars and the S/S/S model can be very stratish.

an extreme measure for sure .........& getting him to try an ebmm is the only truly justified reason . after all....all he has to do is TRY one.......& he will thank her.

Pundix he hates his strat copy... he is planning to gut it and rebuild the thing from scratch - even though he's not quite sure how... :)

I am definately of the line of thought of buying one superior guitar (even if it's 3/4 times more than a normal guitar) rather than 4/5 what I consider "sub" quality guitars. After spending some time on this forum, I'm convinced that nobody else builds a guitar with as much care and attention as these guys.. and that's something I'll beat into him if I have to! :) I might just insist that if he wants me as his bass player he needs a guitar that's up to scratch!

He has admitted that he likes the "look" of the Steve Morse guitar, but seeing as you guys are more likely to know the best tonal matches I thought it best not to go on appearances!

Hey take him to the open house and let him see for himself. Then you can have everyone brow beat him. Hahahaha

Wow ... a woman trying to convince her guitar playing husband to buy Musicman instruments... ? Do you have a sister? If not, maybe if the hubby refuses and it doesn't work out ...??

Good point Blackspy - that is a first - a wife trying to get her husband to buy a guitar. Azzy I sure hope your husband appreciates you!

azzy,

Glad to see you ventured over here with us 6-stringers.

Your hubby might compare a strat to an Albert Lee or Silhouette Special. Or if he plays a 'superstrat' type guitar, a plain Silhouette, Petrucci, or Morse guitar.

I'd probably compare the les paul to an Axis of some sort.

Azzy,

You're right that the EBMM's are built better. I've owned a lot of guitars and EBMM's quality has always been great. Just great consistency. As for a guitar being versitile probably something with H/S/S like a silo or silo special. The Morse guitar would be very versitile as well (though, I've never owned one). The bottom line is get him to play one. Either he is going to love it, or he won't. Are divorce attorney's expensive there?

Just kidding... :D

Azzy,

I've been a G****n fanatic for about all my life. The looks of the Les Pauls and SG's made me drool time and time again (especially since my uncle had a collection of about 50 guitars with a lot of Gibbies). A few years ago, a friend of mine lured me into Deep Purple with their - at that moment- new CD Perpendicular with this guy named Steve Morse on guitar. His playing sounded so sublime so I got into him and found out that he was playing his own Music Man signature. It took me about 3 years before I ordered my own Morse signature (in Belgium it is quite impossible to find a store that has these models in stock because of people's preference for G's and F's; although an EBMM guitar is less expensive than a lot of G's and some F's).
As you can see in my signature, I have two Morses by now and the third is on the way. I had a Gibson SG, a Les Paul Standard and still have a Les Paul Studio and Junior (although both for sale now) and none of them compares to the quality, playability and superiority of the Morse. The humbuckers in the Morse are better sounding than in the Gibsons and you have the opportunity to choose between four different PUPs that can basically cover every style in music he prefers. And I'm sure that the same is true for the other EBMM models.

Furthermore, if he buys just one EBMM (one with a combination of H and S PUPs and maybe even the piezo), this guitar will cost a lot more than one of the others he's thinking about, but it will definitely be cheaper to buy one EBMM instead of three other guitars.

Although, once you go EBMM, there's no way back. Koogie has a nice phrase to state that...

Cheers, Tom.

If he's looking at both tele's and strats, have him play an Albert Lee - and get the best of both in a better overall guitar. You get the 3 single coils and five position switch for the (better than :) ) classic strat sounds. Plus the bridge pup is base plated to give it some extra tele like bite. It's lightweight, well balanced and has a unique look that says I'm not just another strat guy.

Plus you get the MM neck which feels superb and quality workmanship, which can be more hit and miss from the larger foreign factory driven companies.

Good luck with your search. Hopefully I'll soon have more and be able to comment more freely on the other models.

I like to say my Axis Super Sport with MM90s is like a Tele on steriods. It's got all the things you like about a Telecaster - the simple single-cut design, the straight forward electronics, the toneful and expressive pickups - with that legendary EBMM neck and impecable build quality. I've owned a lot of Teles and a lof of Axes (plural of Axis), but today I just own a lot of Axes ;)

I've been told the AL is what a Strat wants to be. If he likes the strat type, try one of those. I don't have one, as I play JP's, but I believe that would be a good match for your hubby.

Actually, according to Jon, The Strat wishes it could be what the AL and the Silhouette/Silhouette Special are!!!

You've gotta take him to where there are many models of EBMM's and only let him try those out for an afternoon. Let him make the final decision, just make sure that you are clear as to why your/were so passoniate about EBMM's.

If that doesn't work, have him sign up and ask all the ?'s in the world.

Sorry I'm late to the party!

azzy_wazzy -

Well, I've got an RV50H and it sounds AMAZING with my Axis (very creamy) and with my Petrucci (more breathy). Since he is playing on an AD30HTC, I am guessing he either doesn't play with as much gain as me, or uses a pedal to get there. Or he just cranks that thing to sweetness!

I think tommyindeleware may be right on here, though. The Morse is probably the most versatile of the EBMMs and the new Y2D looks pretty sweet! My favorite is my Axis. I guess I just like maple tops. The Axis is limited tonally though, with only 3 pickup positions. However, I cheated and put a push/pull coil tap in the volume spot so I can get some pretty decent single coil tones as well. But they are nowhere near what you get out of the Morse or other EBMM single coils. I think the Morse is kind of a do-it-all, and does it all really really well.

If it were me, I'd find a dealer with all the models and go and compare. The necks on all the MMs are different, but sooooooo good. That is what really separates them for me. As much as I also love PRS guitars, there is no neck in all of guitardom that I like better than the Axis. So perfect for a guy like me with fat hands and short fingers! So make him try a bunch out, I think the neck on each may be it's strongest selling point. But again, if he's the kind of guy who wants one axe to do it all, get the Morse Y2D (and man, are they pretty!).

BTW, what's your screen name over on Orange?

EDIT: Never mind, I found you. Same screen name, but only 6 posts! ;)

Hey there, I play the same sort of stuff you guys do, more or less...REM, Television, The Smiths, etc...we write originals, but cover the White Stripes, Pixies, Betty Serveert, Cure....If you haven't checked out Television, you should.

Anyway, I use an Albert Lee s/s/s 90% of the time. I do lots of pickup swaps, you can get a lot of sounds out of the s/s/s combo depending on what you throw in there.

My next guitar will probably be a AL with MM-90's.

I think super sport would be a good option too, but us indie hipsters love an offset. :)
