tuning issues with my new pet...help!

is this a common th ing with these? I think it's binding at the nut....what role do the locking tuners play in all this?

Have you changed string gauges?
If you have changed the strings, did you wrap the string around the capstan?
Can you pull the string straight up out of the nut without it hanging up in the nut?
Do you realize that it is a floating trem and it will never be as precise as a non floating trem?

Just some questions to consider....Let me know ok?

When the guitar is well setup, th efloating returns 100% and the guitar stay in tune OK.

But isn't like no floating trems, you just need to used to it.

Tryu returning the trem to it's initial position when using it. If you could do that, 99% of you headacke will end.

I only have tuning problems with my JP7's under two conditions:

a) when doing huge divebombs or something (which I don't really do because they're cheesy anyway)

or

b) when my strings get old/dead, they start to bind.

I pull my as straight through as possible so their are no winds. I also use that Big Bend's stuff in the nut, it helps a substantial amount.

My Petrucci holds tune perfectly even pretty aggressive trem use with no added graphite in the nut.

changed strings, but haven't changed string gauges
I'm assuming the capstan is the peg where the string goes in? showing my ignorance, obviously..but some are wrapped around more than others..
the strings don't seem to wanna come outta the nut too easily...but I haven't detuned it or anything...I'm assuming I'd have to put a good amount of slack on the string to answer your question

yeah, I know about floating trems..just that this is my first time without a double locking floyd...string locks and such..I know how they can come back sharp or flat sometimes, but the string locks usually keep them in line with one another...

this usually only happens if I bend the E string REALLY outta position (like, nailing a third fret harmonic ala Zakk Wylde) and when I get a little too trem happy..which I don't usually do..butwhen I'm noodling around at home, I do it just to amuse myself =)

Sounds like your nut isn't cut wide enough. No big deal, really.

Take a nut file, or fine grit sand paper (folded in half) and carefully widen the nut slots for the strings that "catch" in the groove. The trem and locking tuners will keep you perfectly in tune unless the strings catch in the nut.

that's what I was figuring...I even hear it..like a little catching noise..like the string gets caught up there then all of a sudden releases....

I'll have to do that..thanks =)

Sounds like that's exactly the problem. Let us know how it turns out!

its got locking tuners they shouldnt be wrapped around at all when you restring pull them tight and then lock them down. if you wrap them around the post when you use the bar the strings drag on the wrap.

don't file your nut til you have identified for sure your slots are too small.
this being a new guitar......i will be very surprised if the slots are the issue. and if it aint your nut..but you file them ....you may aversely affect your string clearance......
also........ fresh strings need more stretching than most people think.....

slight correction..it's new to ME =) I bought it used....

anywho, I'd try graphite before I do any hacking to the nut..lol....
