Poplar is reeeeeally uglee, suitable for opaque finishing.
I've played and owned a number of early 90s SRs, and
every one of them was blonde swamp ash. If you want
a poplar EBMM the most accessible version is the SUB,
and those have possibly the MOST opaque finish you're
ever gonna see on a wooden ax.
There were a very few poplar SRs some time ago. Very
hard to find, cuz they are hard to identify, and are also
rather thin on the ground.
