Poplar is reeeeeally uglee, suitable for opaque finishing.
I've played and owned a number of early 90s SRs, and
every one of them was blonde swamp ash. If you want
a poplar EBMM the most accessible version is the SUB,
and those have possibly the MOST opaque finish you're
ever gonna see on a wooden ax.
There were a very few poplar SRs some time ago. Very
hard to find, cuz they are hard to identify, and are also
rather thin on the ground.

As far as I know, poplar was used for instruments finished in Blueburst which is a trans finish.

I believe it's Ash for natural.
Thank you all for your answers.actually, according to Musicman data base the black body 1991 stingray I have is in poplar. concerning natural body, I see many of them with different type of wood stripes and that's why I was wondering if it was two differents woods. Indeed, some are with stripes that are very close to each others, and some others are with stripes that are less "condensed" and more "spaced"
