Hi,

I have been offered this sweet EVH from '95. Just wanted to know what the value of such a model is, 'cause I don't know much about these models.

If i were buying that EVH, i would take into consideration these things first off:

1. fret wear
2. originallity (all orig.parts)
3. nicks, dents, chips, ect.
4. quality of top wood
5. orig. case
6. color
7. has it been giged


Judging by those pis this one loks pretty good! Purple isnt a super rare color, and it has faded a bit. Some people like the faded look, i'm not a big fan of it. The quilt is unique, which may be good or bad for you? I noticed that the toggle is not original (not a big deal).

If all these points check out and the guitar is solid, i would say that $1600-$1900 would be a fair price for this EVH.

It is really how bad you want it! As long as the mechanical thing are good, the rest is all you!!!

but the quilt looks like it has two "faces" down the bottom of the body

It gets tricky with the EVH because of the collectability of the guitar. To some, it's just a guitar. To others, it's one of only about 6,000 ever made like that and it's worth extra just to own one. And there's the EVH factor which may or may not mean anything to you.

The prices listed by previous posters are fair eBay prices IMO. By "eBay price" I mean you're buying something virtually sight unseen and taking the sellers word that it is what it is. From a buyer's perspective, this means you're not willing to pay as much due to the risk you are accepting in the deal.

If you have the opportunity to put your hands on the guitar and play it prior to purchasing it and it's in good conditon, I'd say the price starts at $2k and goes up. Probably not up a lot unless it's in mint condition. Then probably in the neighborhood of $2.5k.

If it's in played but good condition, you've had a chance to check it out, you like it better than an Axis (this is important since a new Axis is almost the same guitar and can be bought for much less) and he wants less than $2k, buy it. That's a good deal IMO.
 
hbucker has good points.

I wouldn't pay more than $800 for one of those guitars (so you can safely assume I'll never own one). To me it's just an Axis with some scribble on the headstock. To each his own, though. Someone did pay big money for that 'Virgin Mary' grilled cheese sandwich on eBay, after all. ;)

steve no disrespect but i own 2 axis guitars and just recently bought a EVH and the EVH is more than just his sig on it.
the EVH for whatever reason sounds better and feels better?

Hey, I'm not dissing anyone who owns one, or who wants to pay big bucks for one. I was just reinforcing hbucker's point that it's in the eye of the beholder! ;)
Look at the prices Gibby gets for the Jimmy Page signature Les Paul. I wouldn't pay those prices either.. maybe I'm just a cheap bastard! :D

I've played just about every model EBMM guitar and I think my Petrucci is the best feeling and playing model. But that's just my 2 cents, and I really would love one of each! I've got a Y2D being built right now, and I can't wait to report how that one plays! I can tell you now that it will be a *lot* heavier than my Petrucci! I played a Y2D at the Open House and it reminded me just how light the Pet is! :)

FWIW: I've never played an Axis I liked better than my EVH. Some were close. Others, not as much. I would never trade my EVH for an Axis. I'm the original owner of my EVH though. I bought it new in '93 for about $1.4k.

Having said all of this, I find the current price difference between Axis and EVH's to be enough that if I were buying today, I'm not sure I could justify the price difference to get the EVH. Odds are, I would get the Axis, save some $$$ and be just as happy in the long run.

But if $$$ is no big consideration, I think the EVH's are hard to beat.
 
I always was of the impression the differences were extremely minimal at best, and nothing that would affect the tone of the instrument.
 
Well also you can wait to get lucky and get one for 800 dlls like I was... last year... is a matter of search and luck... on the other hand I have an outstanding axis and the EVH both are great guitars, at this moment I will say that both are equaly great, but I haven't had chance to play more the EVH as the Axis so far...:)

I truly don't understand how they can sound overly different? They're same wood, construction, pickups, size, etc... As for feel what could be different, slightly thinner neck width, and no belly cut? Maybe the perceived better sound/feel is because you like the guitar alot more for whatever reason.

Maybe his EVH has 'mojo'?

Every once in a while you encounter one of those guitars that just sounds superior for no logical reason.

A good friend of mine has a Robin guitar that he swears by. He has lots of others ('78 tobacco sunburst Les Paul, an older SG, some Kramer pacers, some Charvel/Jacksons) but that Robin just has mojo. He's broken the neck 3 times and had it repaired each time.. it's still his main gigging guitar and he gigs every weekend!

I have been espousing the merits of my JP to him, and he's supposed to come and play it sometime... maybe I can get that Robin retired!
 
Maybe... I guess its kinda like those people who insist the 5150 amp sounds much better than the 6505.
 
I won't say it sounds logical. It's a feel thing as well as a sound thing. And I've played Axis that I thought were as good. I'm not saying every Axis out there sucks compared to my EVH. That would be silly.

Same pickups is a huge head start on making them sound the same. ...obviously.

The only thing I can point to is the fact that "identical" guitars frequently sound and feel a little diffferent. There is no logical way to explain that other than wood variations. With that, I don't know why it's unreasonable to piont to preferences between the EVH and Axis when there are subtle yet documentable diffferences between the guitars.

No big deal. But like I said, I'm keeping my EVH. :p
