One thing I've noticed from frequenting this forum, is all the chatter about new EB's. Who has the old ones? The only one I've ever seen was Tommy's Steve Morse when I was at his clinic. So who's got em? Prototypes/one-offs/customs, etc...

Lou,

How old is old?? If you use a decade as a starting point, then I have an MM Axis Trans Gold @ 10yrs old, flawless condition, unplayed still in the box/case. It is in the exact same condition as the day I bought it - perfect!!!! No fade, neck variation, etc. . . .

*Note Reason Unplayed: I wanted to make sure I always had one in the case just in case . . . . . . . . . (you can fill in the rest of the sentence, because I think most guitar players always plan a little ahead). LOL

I realize that EB doesn't have vintage models from the 50s but usually, there's always somebody with a nice collection of early examples from any manufacturer.

I have my '89 Silhouette. Still play it all the time. Awesome guitar. It may not share the same eye candy looks as my 20th anniversary Silos, but it's still an awesome guitar. I am surprised someone didn't snap up that '87 Silo that was just on the bay. An early gem! If I hadn't just shelled out for my 2nd 20th Silo, I would have snagged it. Someday, these older, early EBMM guitars are gonna skyrocket in value, mark my words!

I think its generally considered that the current guitars are better than the older ones. Not to say the older ones were were of a sub standard quality, but as R&D has moved along, the company is improving its products all the time.

Do the pre Ernie Ball MMs count?
I've got a 1976 Stingray bass. I use it for recording and at church every now and then. It's an excellent instrument. (natural finish/ black pickguard/ white pickup/ maple fretboard)

I don't have an early EBMM, but did want to stick in my $0.02 - I love some of the quirky features of the early EBMM Silhouettes - the plug-and-play pickguards, and for their day those old fine-tuning Schaller roller bridges were unique. From a "playable yet collectable among fans" standpoint I would love to have one of those mid-80s Silos.

Well it ain't vintage, but I have a 91 Morse. 6-bolter. Maybe it's the extra bolt ... but this guitar sounds tremendous.

I have two very early Silo's. One is the 10th Silo made. I also have a Petrucci model prototype.

I don't really have much interest in digging back in EBMM history to buy "vintage." I guess other people always will, and that's fine too.

I do want to rescue some old EBMMs that people are selling. It's mostly because of the birdseye and flame maple necks. I wouldn't mind picking up a nice AL, Silo Spec, or ASS with a fantastically figured neck.
