Whammy! How often?

Hey guys!

There's a Silo H-S-H with piezo at the local shop, but has no trem!
All the guitar I've ever owned have always had a trem, either standard or floyd.
I'm no Steve Vai and don't plan on being him either. Before I would use the whammy mostly for fun, and always got it just in case, and was still thinking that way.
I am questioning whether I really need it or not?
I know the types of music I like and am trying to remember how many songs would require it.

How often would you say you use it?

Don't settle, even if you use the trem once, you'll regret not having one, especially with the vintage trem, it's very stable yet at the same time it's a trem.

If you use it, get the trem.

I use them all the time, the guitars without feel strange to me.

Hmmmmm....interesting question. Do you need it or want it? That's what you have to decide. Personally, I find my self using it very little on my Axis and a bit more on my JP (probably because it is so smooth).

Although, I am kind of in Raz's camp on this one. If you think you might miss it, then don't get one without. HOWEVER, in the event I ever purchase a guitar with piezo (next on my list), I would not want a trem with it. Less carving in the body without the trem, maybe gets a better acoustic tone. Plus, with the piezo, you don't want to be using the trem. It is my understanding that using the trem with the piezo will cause loss of signal due to the string not touching the piezo saddle, but I'm just guessing here!

You can bend your pitch down a little bit and still use the piezo, but if you try to dive bomb, your sound will disappear on you. Anyways, who would want to use both the piezo and a whammy at the same time? Well, at least seriously anyway.

Also note that if you get the piezo, the trem will not be set up to float.

In any case, I can't see myself not owning a trem guitar. That's what I like to use most of the time. And the rest of the time, I have my Les Paul.

Not on the Axis. Not sure about the Silo.

I would say hard tail every time. I never miss not having one, and you make make most trem type noises with your fingers. Also string changing is easier, tuning is 100% all the time, and better acoustic tone as there is more wood.

That said, I am lusting after an Axis with a floyd!

Each of my Pets obviously have a trem....however, when I want to go to a different tuning, I find that I want a hardtail.....just easier cause I'm lazy.

But, I hardly use the trem......I don't go wild with it...mainly use it to flutter a held note to give it more character, but not anything crazy like dive bombs......those are so 80's...LOL...

I think it does on the Luke (non-piezo)...

Both my guitars don't have trem, I don't miss it because I have no use of it but my next guitar will have a trem just in case I ever need one

Not on the Axis. Not sure about the Silo.

No, the factory set-up for the Silo/Silo Special is also non-floating. However, I believe you could float either the Axis or the Silo/Silo Special non-piezo trem by following the set-up guide for the Luke in the FAQs.

I ordered my Silo Special to be my "Strat"; it is s/s/s and has the trem. I don't really use the trem, but I believe that having the trem bridge is part of what makes a Strat a Strat; I've never liked the sound of a hardtail Strat as well as one with a trem. The best Fenders I've owned have been '62RI Strats, and "my Strat set-up" was always to have the bridge adjusted to only lower pitch and have everything adjusted for .009s, so I love the fact that the factory set-up for the Silo Special was "my Strat set-up" right out of the box.
