What 5 String Should i Get

i'm not loaded... But i'm not really looking at this from a price perspective.

i used to play for about 7 years from highschool into adulthood. Then i got married, had kids and stopped playing for about 4 or 5 years.

A friend of mine is in some bands and wants me to play on some projects.

i want a Music Man 5 string (never had a 5 string, but would like to get one to learn on and so i don't have to tune down for some of these projects).

What would you all recommend?

The Bongos looked cool, but i've always had my heart set on a Stingray (and was always too broke to get a Music Man when i was younger).

Any suggestions?

Also if anyone is in Orange County, can you recommend some good shops to check out?

Thanks in advance!

If you are set on a SR then, by all means, get one... there is nothing like satisfying gear lust!

Seriously, if $ is an issue, you can't go wrong with a SR. The looks, the options and what's available on the used market make the SR an awesome choice.

The Bongo is and isn't a very different beast. It feels, sounds and plays like a SR but it isn't. IT is its own monster but until prices drop on the used market a bit more (or until an actual used market appears) it is on the high-end money side.

So what have I said in all of this??? Get a Ray, you can't go wrong there.

What a trip, i grew up in Cincinnati.

i will probably get the Sting Ray... The problem i'm running into in So Cal is that i'm not finding a lot of 5 string Music Men to begin with... i suppose i can order one, but i like to bargain/haggle over prices a bit :)

The prices i was seeing at Guitar Center for the 4 string Bongo and the 4 String Sting Ray weren't very different. Maybe a couple of hundred dollars. But the price seemed ian the same ballpark.

The Guitar Center in Sherman Oaks has a couple of fivers. But this is in the Valley and I doubt you'd be willing to take the nasty drive from Orange County to the Valley, eh? ;)

if you really want a SR5 and there isnt that much of a selection check ebay. or you can order one from an online dealer like musicians friend. you might want to check bass central from florida i think they might ship basses else where but im not sure.

Bass Central is a very good place to shop, no matter where you are. They will get you a great bass at a great price and ship it to you, no problems.

Best thing to do is call and talk to them.

They also tend to have a great used MM selection (including a used 5 string HSC Bongo at the moment!). Plus, you can't get better service than what Gard, Grasshopper, Beav and the boys will give you.

True. I bought my Bongo 5 from Gard and - having just spent the morning playing it for the first time in a while - I think I definitely owe Gard a beer.

That's the problem you run into when you own so many women... oh, I mean basses!! Not enough time in the day to play with them all...

:p

I was just talking to Gard on Friday. My friend, Dave, and I will be making a little sojourn down to Orlando in the Fall for the sole purpose of going to Bass Central and hitting Islands of Adventure while we are there. Gard has (again) graciously offered his pad for us to crash at while we are there. I'm sure he'll drag us for sushi while we are there, too. :-D

And, speaking of beer, Gard was nice enough to smuggle some Yangling for my transplanted NY girlfriend when he came to Atlanta for one the TB Bass GetTogethers. Let's see GC manage to do THAT! :D

How does the SUB compare with the Stingray? What's the tangible difference between them? Besides the price of course.

I can't top beer, but one of the guys at GC did hook me up with a nice rig to use for 3 weeks while I was having mine repaired (and it wasn't being repaired at GC). It was his own Ampeg SVT Classic with the 8x10 cab... very cool on all of their parts - lets see a fellow gutair player do something like that (or track down beer for some one other then himself).

i ended up getting a tight Graphite Pearl, 5 string Bongo and i must say that i'm in love with it.

Hello, McFly! Let's not forget our pal bassplyr. His prices are so low you can probably get a Bongo 5 for the price of a Ray 5 somewhere else. His tag says that he just has one in. :D
