I need help on a decision i have been trying to make for a few weeks. I have about £120 (about $200) and i cant make a decision to either buy an alesis 3630 Compressor with the money or buy a musicman hardback case and some good quality leads. I already have a hardback case but it isnt a musicman and i would love having a case with the brand name of my bass on it (and ofcourse the sheer quality of musicman cases). I dont know a great deal about compressors, just a little knowledge of the things. Is the Alesis 3630 a good compressor for that money?

Please help me i certainly need it

Get the case and some other good stuff. In the end you'd get more use out of that stuff than a compressor.

I've generally had some reservations about cases with the brand of bass emblazoned across the front of it, just for the theft factor. I figure a thief who knew about basses sees two cases sitting there, one plain jane, and another with MUSICMAN emblazoned across it, he's gonna grab the MusicMan one, cause 99% of the time, it's gonna have a great bass in it, whereas the plain old case may have a $100 squire pbass copy in it.

But he probably would just grab both and high tail it outta there

Last year I got ripped of for the 2 basses in my living room ... 1 Fender AmeriJ5Dlx & 1 EBMMSR5 ... both were in their cases ... I was out for a 2 hour lunch meeting ... it "stinks" of "inside job" ... somebody(s) knew I was out and there was gear at my place ...

Everyone involved in the "case of the stolen basses" sez the badguyz came to find the merchandise and get out asap ... most players will know Music Man is a quality piece ... most badguys will know a Fender gets a few "rocks" but a brand spankers Purple/Maple SR5 needs to get out of town fast and therefore doesn't get all that much more at the "rockshop" ...

Except for *you* doing something stupid, if the badguyz are gonna get you, they're gonna get you and you can't do much about it ...

Get the MM case and don't forget to keep your "honey's" properly insured ...

Getting ripped off hurtz ... a "free" replacement BlackCherryBurst/Maple SR5 helps make some of the the hurt go away.

The Alesis comp doesn't have a good reputation. It's a noisy unit.

I don't see the point of paying extra for a case because it has a "name" on it. A case is a case as far as I'm concerned.

Getting back to compressors, steer away from the DBX rack units too. They're great for PA applications, but, like the Alesis, have a poor reputation when used in a bass rig. The RNC ("Really Nice Compressor") is a great unit. The MXR pedal is a good unit. Behringer rack mount gear is excellent value for money and very quiet, and would be a good option if you're on a budget.

Besides 2 stolen basses last year, I was once ripped off at the entrance to a "reputable" venue because I turned my back to my carryon for 15 secondz ... it cost me a lot of aggravation and $100 cash to get 1/2 half of my stuff back from the "well known junkie ES335 player" observed behind me at the checkin' desk ...

Lucky for me he failed to notice he'd dropped his datebook from his top pocket when he bent down to grab my stuff before running back to his car ... lucky because I didn't have to look far for his phone number and I had an excuse to ask him if he'd "seen anybody, *accidently* mistake my bag for their's on the way out" *Before the gig* :-}}}

A professional household insurance broker can take your money but *you* have to be smart enough for *both* of you because most neighbourhood "moneygrabberz" don't understand much about musical instruments - I have "replacement" value for what's at home, and there's another category paid separately for "unusual disappearance" charged per $100 of replacement value "away from home" ... full specs, purchase transaction documents, pics, serial #s and police reports are all parts of the scene ... and I (nearly) *always* purchase from my authorized Ernie Ball retailer ... his *Letter of Ownership Proof & Replacement Quotation* goes wayyyyy far with the insurance company at which point purchase order numbers and claim approvals fly verbally by phone between the right people ...

For my $$$, Music Man cases are valuable to me *not* so much for the kool name, but for durability and the precise fit of the instrument inside the case ... aktually, there are times and places I have to carry the girl backa$$wardz to keep from attrakting drooleez and other ne'r_do_wellz ...

I'm not sure how well generic cases would immobilize my babies when I need them to "sleep tight" ??? I know my Fender and G&Ls tend to flop a bit in their "factory cases".
