Hi guys,
Got a question. I have a really nice vintage sunburst Axis Sport with MM90s, however, I'm jonesin' for a guitar with humbuckers. Would it be stupid to have it professionally routed and set up with humbucker(s)? I know some would say yes because it de-values the guitar, however if you plan on keeping it there's really not a problem. Being a family man, I REALLY don't have extra cash hanging around, so saying "just buy another EB with humbuckers isn't an option" at all. To be honest, I have $65 dollars of my own to use. That's how tight things are. I've thought about selling it and getting a Sub 1 and some other stuff, but I don't know if this is a good idea as well. Oh well, thanks for any opinions folks !

Hey Rxtech:

I know what you feel now. I've been through this knida life before.
Btw, I like MM90' more than hums, though my guitar is equiped with hums(axis).
And i think MM90' is good for a full range of styles from metal to blues.(personal opinion). So my advice is to just keep it on you AXIS SPORT. I'm pretty sure as soon as you have hums you ll find it is not as great as you thought. (kinda human nature:D )

But please hold! I had thought to sell my Axis but I feel so glad I didnt do it. When you have the money and want the guitar back you have to pay more then!Man,there must be some other way to work out your financial problem now. Never give up your dream. SUB is good ,but....

Yeh, I probably should just hold onto the Axis Sport, and it really is a nice guitar, as all EB's are. Maybe I should sell some other equipment and buy a used Sub1 with buckers. Anyway, thanks! Any other opinions?

Dimarzio offers a whole line of P90 sized humbuckers. From what I hear the DLX series really smokes. They also offer a Tone Zone model. That's probably the least expensive route and you won't have to butcher your Axis.

this is your only option..as the mm90 routes are bigger than a hummer routing....
u could make adapter rings.....but it looks like ..............well u get the idea.....

$65 isn't going to buy you a lot of humbucker. (New Bill Lawrences are $50 a piece and that's probably your cheapest bang for the buck.)

Personally, I'd hold on to the guitar until you have the cash saved up for one with 'buckers. Or you could sell yours and pick up a second hand one for not much difference. Or, maybe you could do an outright trade with someone on the board, etc.

i´m not shure how the dimarzio P90 Tonezone sounds, but i would defenetly try this PUP. dimarzios are very good sounding PUPs and they say the P90 TZ sounds like the original TZ, guess what, i belive it.
bought a lot of dimarzio HB the last few years and i never regrette any deal. and all the pups sounds like they were discriped on the dimarzio site.

i wouldn´t reroute the guitar for HBs, just change the type of the P90.

I can vouch for the DLX. Very versatile and it has excellent single coil tones as well. Great pickup.

I'm not really a pickup swapping type of guy, and not to sideline the thread, but does "Rxtech" = pharmacy technician? If so, I've got my license, too

yep, I'm a pharmacy tech. Now you know why I'm so broke.:D

Also, thanks for all the responses, guys. This is a cool forum!

Interesting thread guys.

I have an ASS MM90, I love the neck pickup but the bridge one doesnt do a lot for me. I'm going to have to look into the P90 sized HB option.

Does it work hooking it into the silent circuit?

Anyone have any schematics.

Dave- if you call/email MM customer support they'll send you a wiring diagram- they're great like that. (I have a good collection going, courtesy of them.)

The silent circuit will be engaged when either MM90 is on. If you replace both you won't need the circuit. If you keep the neck you'll still need it, though you'll want to disengage it from the new bridge HB.

Another option is bareknuckle pickups!
These things ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have been on their forum for awhile.
Tim, owner, is a great guy and owns a EBMM with these pups in.
There is a multitude of sound samples and players clips on the site.
Tim, hand winds all his pickups and gives them a lifetime warranty. He has couple of distributors in US and will ship from UK anyway.
His pups are amazing!!!!!!!!! He names them on the sound he was/is going for; Riff Raff (AC/DC), Cold Sweat, my fave, (John Sykes era Lizzy), VHII (EVH), Warpig (Sabbath) etc., you get the picture.
Covered pups have a multitude of cover plate options, weathered, old gold, chrome, flat chrome, black,Heat Coloured (mmm) etc.
Anyway, In NO way am I affiliated with them but just love their business and site.

Those are the switching diagrams- the other half of those drawings are the schematics they use for the wiring:
