Hey, I just wanna know wut people think about the Best bassists that are still around. These are my picks:

4. Geddy Lee (Rush)
3. Steffan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band)
2. Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
1. Les Claypool (Primus)
 
Maybe a few arent best, but still I think they're great:

1) Flea (Yes yes, not very original)

Argh!!!!!!!!!! I was gonna go with Gold for my fretless but the missus talked me into Blue!!!! oh well, there's always the single H 4 for next Christmas..or summer right?! :rolleyes:

It depends on what you mean by "best". There are several criteria that one could consider when attempting to make a list of the "best" bass players...technical ability, groove/feel, creativity, versatility, a unique style, and so on. However, in my opinion there is no such thing as a "best" bass player. There are a lot of great bass players, and they're all great for different reasons. Everyone has their favorites, and most people would be inclined to name their favorites as the "best". Is Geddy Lee better than Jimmy Haslip? Both are great bass players with their own unique set of talents...but if you're a huge Rush fan, for example, then you'd probably say Geddy is better than Jimmy (if you're even familiar with the Yellowjackets). Is Nathan East better than Hutch Hutchinson? Is Mike Brignardello better than John Myung? Is Rhonda Smith better than Pino Palladino? Is Rickey Minor better than some guy I've never even heard of? Who knows? Instead...perhaps your question could be asked a different way: What current bass player (or players) epitomize a particular technique, or style/genre of music? Obviously this is entirely subjective and there is no wrong answer (since everyone has their favorites)...but at least it gets away from having to define the "best" bass players which is an impossible thing to do.

Slapping: Mark King
Fretless (electric): Percy Jones
Jack of all trades: Jimmy Earl

Blues: Roscoe Beck, Tommy Shannon, Greg Rzab
Jazz/Fusion: Alain Caron, Victor Bailey, Christian McBride
Country: David Hungate, Willie Weeks, Dave Pomeroy

btw, yellowjackets are sick, dont think their still around tho... i remember doing one of their songs back in the day, if i find the name i'm post it; sick bassline
