I want to hear the best justifications you guys have come up with for owning more than one guitar of the same model. These can be reasons said out loud for someone else ( a wife perhaps) or to yourself - we all do it....

You are responding to the cry, heard around the guitar owning world of "how many of these f***ing things can you play at once?"

give it your best shot.

Maple and rosewood.
Backup for gig incase of string breakage.
I love the one I have and I don't want to sell it to buy the new one.
Because I can.
Status.
I really want Sterling to like me.
It's a disease for which there is no known cure. Even if there were a cure I would not acknowledge it.
Ash poplar and alder all sound different.
2 with floating floyds, one with the lowers pitch only floyd (the only silo of its kind) and piezo trem

ive never purchased "duplicates" and i dont think i would ... but if i did my justification to myself would be something like "well, i couldnt pick between 2 colors - so i bought one, then the other a little bit later".

I've had the "you have too many guitars" discussion w/ an ex girlfriend and the point that won the "argument" for me was:

"so you have 6 pairs of black pants - i cant tell the difference, but you can. also, you have 8 pairs of blue jeans - i have 2. you say they're all different: one has pockets, the other doesnt, one has this kinda hem has that hem, one is straight leg etc. you know the small differences and that makes it worth your time to have many of them ... same w/ my guitars. theyre different in a way I understand but you wouldnt".

she totally got the point and i didnt even have to bring up the fact that she had 12,000 pairs of shoes ... or that her haircuts cost $150 and mine cost $9.99 :)

I enjoy the variety and diversity of my collection. 4 EBMMs (and a 5th on the way!) and none are the same model type.

Good reasons keep 'em coming.
One of you guys has given this a lot of thought, "Why not?" however is not a reason its an act of defiance. I like your style mbgreene but I wouldn't want you on my debating team.

'Cause it's always been a dream of mine. Since I was a kid, I've always wanted a room full of guitars and music equipment. And dammit, I can afford it now (no wife or kids yet), so I'm doing it.

(In addition to the guitars ... I've got a Roland V-Drum kit, bunch of keyboards and other misc. instruments lying around.)

Different tunings...

With differen't pickups....different tones. (I've always been a fan of this if I find an instrument that feels nice).

Because they're comfortable and I can coax any sound I need out of them...

Backups for gigging (especially if you do often).

Different finishes compliment my wardrobe...

You can have one tuned in E, one tuned in Eb, one tuned in D, and many many more for weird tunings à la Keith Richards...

Plus it's your money right? you worked for it, you get to spend it the way you want... :D

I think on an animal level sometimes we think if one is great, 2 would be twice as good. This might explain buying two essentially identical guitars.

The best excuse I can think of is a backup during a gig.

Beyond that, there probably isn't a huge functional reason you need more than one of the same guitar. But if you want 100 of the same thing, knock yourself out.

Sometimes I regret a little bit having 4 EVH style guitars with 2 hot humbuckers. None is identical to any of the others but the similarities make for a less interesting collection.

Ultimately I think a good collection of guitars has some kind of variety to it. But a person should collect what makes them happy. I know a guy who has 26 Strats. He's happy as a clam.

Does anything else matter?

:D

Just counter with ...

Why do you have so many pairs of shoes (dresses, purses, blouses, whatever works). They buy the same stuff, in different colors, sometimes they buy the exact same color even.

If that doesn't give you any leverage, the whole it was my dream as a boy crap definitely works.

I went for the quick shot

But if one system of values (say the desire to "own" anything much less more than "one" of anything) is debated to question the necessity of rationalizing ones true passion, it therein also establishes a moral quandry.

Morality is subjective Yet subjecivity is objective. A moral notion implies attributes to substances which exist only in a rational duality, not as an essential extension of ontological existence.
Judgement of any system, or a priori relationship or phenomenon exists in an irrational, or metaphysical, or at least epistemolocical concept such as being, or to be or to occur in the thing itself or of the thing itself.

All things are unique and owning one is not necessarily owning all.

Other than that these other guys that gave this some thought have laid down some good excuses (*ahem*) I mean reasons. :D

The bottom line is, no matter how apparently consistent all guitars are made, there is no accounting for the tone/density of the woods used. You also have to factor in how compatible tonally, the body is to the neck. Also, all EBMM necks are hand sanded and finished and this in itself can make a mountain of a difference to the overall feel and tone. Am I convincing you? Anyway, guitars can get lonely, I bet nobody ever told you that!!!!

I have two argumets that always work for me and really can't be argued with.

1) Because justice is the square root of peanut butter. And,
2) The devil made me do it.

Works every time. :D

If you're gonna quote Paris Hilton, you really should give her credit.
