Zero fret?

Anyone around here ever put a zero fret on a Ray? I wonder what that would do to the sound.

On an instrument with a "zero fret", the traditional slotted nut still controls the strings spacing but the zero fret (which is actually fret wire) now controls the height of the strings above the frets. The strings will lay directly on the zero fret and string height will be adjusted by filing or replacing the zero fret instead of cutting the slots in the nut deeper.

This sounds like a pain to me.

The theoretical advantages of a zero fret are mostly about chords, unless I am mistaken.

I think I'll keep my compensated nuts.

Had a 0 on a 6-string fretless (nice table top bass too )... like Jack said, it help while chording but other than that everything else was pretty much the same.

It's supposed to minimize tonal differences between open and fretted strings but it is definitely a pain.

Hmmm, yeah I hadn't thought about how much of a pain it might be for dealing with string height.

I have a zero fret on my MTD and it is awesome. It makes open notes sound like fretted ones. No maintenance required, and no nuts to break.
